OT: World Series

Anyone watch baseball? I don't. Just happened across the Phillies v Astros during the bottom of the 8th inning.

What's with that clown gimmicky pitcher for the Astros? Baby swing or whatever followed by the Hokey Pokey before throwing the ball? I mean, WTF? Why is that dude in pro baseball with his gimmicky crap? He lost the game for the Astros.

Anyway, what do I know. I haven't watched pro baseball since even before the NBA became a game of 1 on 5 offensively. And I no longer watch the NBA either because it got boring with 1 on 5 style of play.

Short week and must win against Rice!

I was out n about with some EP friends in town for the Cowboys game. We were all huddled around my phone watching the game on ESPN Plus. This game came down to 3 plays. Dropped TD pass by TE, BS pass interference call that reversed a TD and blown coverage on 75 yard TD. Other than that UTEP played solid on Defense. Offense for both teams was getting dominated by the defenses for the most part. These two teams were evenly matched and those plays made the difference. Rice this Thursday is an Absolute must win if there's any Bowl Hopes obviously. I'll be at the UTSA game, however I don't feel confident we'll even be close. Quick turn around Prediction for Thursday

New NCAA Basketball rules

This came out in March after post season play. OOC play is going to be so much fun as refs try to sort this out? What will this do with Golding's coaching style as reports from closed scrimmages report very aggressive play.

""New 3-point line
Men’s college basketball moved the 3-point line from 20-feet, nine inches to 22-feet, 1.75 inches. The women’s line remained the same, meaning on a number of college floors there will be two lines."

Why?

"“Players have been shooting it deeper," said Gavitt. “This should create more driving opportunities and posting opportunities. The difference in 3s taken and made may end up being marginal. Players can make that shot to the FIBA distance.""

"Shot clock resets to 20 seconds on an offensive rebound

The plan with this change was to increase the flow of the game and add more possessions. The thinking was that there was no need to reset the shot clock to 30 seconds when teams wouldn’t need those 10 seconds to get the ball up the floor since they would already be in the offensive end of the court.

Collins said the main issue will be a technical one since a shot-clock operator would have two buttons at his disposal — one to reset to 30 seconds and one to reset to 20. If it’s a bang-bang offensive rebound then it might be difficult to manage in a split second or two.

Collins said if the ball were to get batted back to the mid-court line then it would be reset to 30."

"Get rid of flopping"

Gavitt said this will be the closest one to watch in November and December and as a result, be a teaching tool early in the season.

"The rules committee made it clear they want it out of the game," said Gavitt. "We will see a bunch of calls early and it will cause some anxiety for players and coaches but everyone will adjust."

Remember how some opponents would double or even triple team (i.e.-Rice) Bryson Williams and flopped if his bicep grazed them?

"But wait! There's more!"

"On a 3-point shot, Collins said they will be looking for any contact. If the player is shooting and the defender is flying by him without contact and the shooter goes to the floor then that’s a flop. They will also be looking to see if the shooter initiates contact, jerks his head back in an attempt to try and fool officials.

On a block or charge, if the player’s head goes back before the body does then the player could be flopping. Can there be a foul and a flop? Collins said yes. That’s when the offensive player makes contact with the defender and hits him enough that the defender steps back and embellishes the contact. That can be an offensive foul and a flop.""

A flagrant 1 foul is two shots and the ball and that means excessive in nature or unnecessary or avoidable, uncalled for or not required by the circumstances of the play.

A flagrant 2 foul is two shots and the ball and the player is ejected from the game. The rules committee added more words to describe this scenario, including brutal, harsh or cruel or dangerous or punishing.

“There will be more opportunities for teaching,” Gavitt said. “Everyone will adjust and a cleaner game for it."

Secret Scrimmages vs Exhibitions

Looks like a lot of college basketball teams are going this route in the pre-season. Any thoughts as to why the current trend?

I feel at least, exhibition games would give the team the chance to play in front of a crowd in the Haskins Center. It will be interesting to see how they perform in an opener vs the Aggies.

Also, does anyone else have the strange feeling that this team is gonna play a tough game vs the Longhorns?? I do!

OT: The Return of the NBA

I am really excited about the NBA returning in a few weeks. Some interesting stuff happening the last few days.

Zion left the NBA Campus today. It’s rumored the reason the NBA went beyond the 16 playoff teams was because they wanted to showcase him. I believe the Pelicans are in the first game when the season resumes. He'll be ineligible to play if he doesn’t get a daily Covid test.

NBA players will have the option of putting a saying/message on their jersey instead of their last name.

Westbrook and Eric Bledsoe have rested positive in the last week.

There’s a hotline the players can call to rat out other players for not following the quarantine rules. Apparently they are getting a lot of calls.
