UTEP and the new CUSA - what are the positives?

You know what's funny is that a couple of years ago we were asking Dimel to pass more and now we're asking him to run more. We really need Dimel to find a balance and not overcommit one way or the other
Balance is ideal with the right qb. We don't have the right qb. Keeping it out of Hardisons hands as much as possible is the way to go for utep.

Hardison was the QB during both arguments. Disclaimer: I'm not sold on Hardison as well. Just pointing out what has happened

Hardison still has the best arm in the conference. So we hear every season. And it's true. But Hardison has also not improved his passing touch or downfield vision for the receivers in his time as the starting QB. A big part of that fact can be blamed on either poor coaching or coaching stubbornness to not see the lack of improvement in a player. Hardison has the physical ability to be a top player. It's the mental part of the game where he is lacking. Teams need a QB with enough arm to get the ball to the receiver yes, but the best QBs can drop the ball right into a spot just ahead of their man so he can catch it with little break in stride and keep running for those extra yards. The NFL keeps stats on yards after catch. Trevor Vittatoe was the best UTEP has ever seen at that.

He seems to be a good QB with the skills, but watching him play constantly reminds me of the golf saying, you drive for show and put for do. Arm strength is not an issue; his ability to make the short to intermediate pass when needed makes you cringe.

Hardison has a tendency to throw off his back foot. Sort of a chuck n duck motion. If he corrects that he becomes much more efficient. Depends on how much work he's put in this off season.

Good golf analogy. His short game sure needs work. Are the coaches doing anything on this in practice? This is an area where touch on the ball is more important than arm strength.

Hardison has corrected nothing the past 3 years. What you see is what you get which is a starting QB with the skill set of a 3rd string QB. The only thing coaching related with Hardison is why is he starting at this level and why hasn’t Dimel tried to upgrade the QB position these past 3 years.
