We could begin to lose players to the big schools that pay more money.

This was a circumstance over twenty years in the making. Sadly, it got steam due to a major, major recession that the USA is coming (or came out of. Depending on economic experts you listen to) out of. If there were more readily available jobs for college students when they graduated, the cost of college diploma would have more value, thus having more value to the student athlete playing major D1 sports.
