BYU just made the Not So Small 12 right?

It's the anniversary. Funny how no one here even remembered or at least didn't bring it up. They have an entire thread about it.

The other time in my lifetime that UTEP upset a top 25 BYU, we were relying on a backup quarterback who was playing with a concussion. (Rocky would never be let back onto the field nowadays.)

That game is nearly as memorable, IMO, just not quite as much of an upset and not quite as bad of a UTEP team.

I was at the game and was amazed with Rocky’s toughness. Although he was only a freshman he played with poise and turned out to be a great QB and leader on the team.

Certainly our biggest upset and probably our most satisfying win ever due to BYUs success and our hatred of success. But for the program, probably the two Sun Bowl wins in the 60s were bigger political successes for the Miners. They got us into the WAC which had devoured the Border Conference in 1961 leaving UTEP out in the cold.

The success of the football team and the 1966 NCAA BBall championship likely played a part in UTEP being invited to the WAC which at the time had membership from BYU, Arizona, ASU, Wyoming, New Mexico, and UTAH.

Probably got us into the UT system as well

We like to brag a lot about the BYU games in 85 and 97, and beat our chest when we find out that losing those games are a thorn in the side of some of BYU's fans. But I would much, much rather trade places with BYU when it comes to our all time record against them: be 26-2 in last 5 decades with many blow out wins against two surprising losses.
