What happens now??

New coach is going to have another tough first year. Probably a crappy year. How can a new coach dig UTEP out of this mess???

Hopefully Senter hires a coach who has some players he can bring .

But what's happens with the roster?? I actually find it hard to believe that any player stays.

I think it's gonna be a wait and see approach by most of our players, but I could see 3-4 more transfers out depending on the new coach.

I would love to see this current team under Barbee and then let him build from there.

Just read that Golding is a JUCO guy. He has a good reputation for making a nice glass of lemonade when lemons are given to him.

We know Barbee is a build from scratch guy but then again, the transfer portal didn't exist in it's totality back then. Barbee is known for finding hidden gems, especially in SEC country. Stone was another hidden gem from California with not even a whiff from (SoCal) D1 Cali schools. I keep bringing this up but I clearly remember this site going ballistic Culpepper's first year (we can laugh about it now). The first year will have some pain. Barbee plays in your face defense and an aggressive offense and works his player's arses off.

BG: Master X's and O's coach. Surrounds himself with not just good, but great assistants. Sadler was one such assistant and road B.G.'s coat tails to Huskers Nation. Just was not a great fit for UTEP. Anyways, it's "floor it!" style play for Billy and UTEP fans loved it. It was exciting and sold tickets. Unlike Barbee who recruits very athletic players who can potentially play pro later, Billy is a player specific to his offense to the detail. Omar Thomas was not on any first or second round NBA radar but he and Fili ran BG's offense with efficiency and aggressiveness. Billy can pluck a prized recruit from the power schools like Rick Stansbury at WKU. Billy is also not afraid to go overseas, too. Many coaches stay within the country.

Marvin Menzies: The thorn in UTEP's side for years. One player, Pascal Siakam kept UTEP fans and Tim Floyd up at night. I personally thanked the Big Man upstairs when he finally exhausted his eligibility. Also like Barbee, the coach can flat out recruit, period. No name players with no stars and no local town write up's on them and he won. Also like Barbee, he moved on UNLV and it didn't go well.

Chris Jans: Good coach and you have to believe with major jump in salary and facilities at UTEP he has too be at least sleeping on it. KDBC CBS 4 sports anchor says Senter reached out to Jans which has not been verified. One major black spot is that Jans totally mismanaged the pandemic and during strict quarantine at a secluded Arizona resort......twice! NMSU AD Moccia wrote a fat check for money they did not have to salvage the season and even got the NM hard line Gov to sign off. Jans squandered it. Do we want another coach who makes costly decisions? What I mean is that it costed the Aggies critical play which costed them the title against Grand Canyon who had a 24 game season with more game experience. UTEP has gone thru two coaches (Floyd and Terry) who have made questionable decisions that soured seasons while having solid athletic players. This is blemish that Senter should not take lightly. If he makes it to a final few, UTEP fans will not let Senter forget if Jans turns out to be another Rodney Terry.

Kyle Keller. How this coach is not at a power conference staff is a mystery? Keller has been on record saying he doesn't need the bigger programs. Runs a defense that is very aggressive. A big plus, he is a community oriented coach and some say is a very humble man. UTEP fans eat that stuff up. Bad side, UTEP has had really nice, humble men in major revenue sports as coaches but fans want "W's", now. Let's be honest, UTEP basketball players and staff are under constant watchful eye and the pressure can be a bit much. I don't think he would be interested. I have him scratched off early.

Senter likes experienced head coaches. His top will be Golding and Jans and a coach out of left field no one expected because, well......he is Senter. UTEP fans like Barbee. The local media believes he can win here. His style of coaching and development is an on-paper-fact with UTEP. But Athletic Directors have ego's and he will not reach out to Barbee for a second time. No one saw Terry nor Dimel coming and there is nothing for me to believe otherwise that Senter will not pull that trigger again.

Jans will be the man is where my money is at but I think it will be another questionable Senter hire like Dimel and Terry. NMSU has no money, they can't make much of a counter offer and with NMSU''s biggest booster Stanley Fulton's Sunland Park Casino taking a brutal beating with no horse racing from Covid and hard line governor, I'm sure he will tell Moccia to let him go.

Assuming there are some players that we want to keep, how do you all think Golding, Tang, Barbee, Jans and Foster might view our current roster? Are any of them looking at it and saying we have some really good pieces or vice versa (we need a total makeover). We don't really have a style for Foster, but how do our guys fit into Golding's style of play or the dribble drive?

There are only 9 players listed on UTEP's 21-22 roster and BW isn't one of them.
Interesting. No Vila either. Only 7 scholarship players. I suspect Fisher and/or Hill will probably move in a different direction too. Hopefully they stay.

We have to see who comes in and what they think of this roster. Players may want to leave, and players may be asked to leave, we’ll have to wait and find out.

Well, hard to say. Completely different style of play than what our guys are used to. And at least apparently, a whole different level of accountability. The way ACU pressures, everybody has to do their part or holes will be poked into the defense. We had so many holes in our defense and it never seemed anyone was held accountable.

Seems to me Kennedy would fit in with his defensive prowess. He’d probably be told to stop shooting the 3 as much as he did. Boum, if he can honor the name on front of the jersey more than the back, should be ok too. Not sure about Bieniemy. Sjolund will have to pick up his defense. Agnew on the defensive side will fit in. Onyema would fit his style with how well he runs. Just depends on how well he can defend or how coachable he is. That’s my best estimation at this point.

Just write a check to Sean Miller for whatever he wants. Let him take 2 years to recruit like heck, rebuild his image, get UTEP to the dance, and he can bounce for a major program again. Problem solved

I'd wait on Miller, it all hasn't shaken out at UA and some pretty nasty things could come up. Agree he is a good coach and can recruit but he has baggage we haven't seen yet.
I hear you but that didn’t stop us with Mike Price or CTF and there were a lot of years that Price had the Sunbowl feeling like a major CFB event and program.

Sean Miller is alleged to have paid players to play at Arizona. He has denied it. Cool to bring him in with the possibility that he will be penalized by the NCAA? I mean, Arizona stood by him for 4 years after the allegation were made public. And they fired him only for losing, not for violating NCAA rules.

So we’d rather bring in a guy (Golding) who is barely above .500 win percentage at a small school?

Funny you say that. I was thinking the same thing. If Golding is hired and doesn't work out fans will be calling for Senter's head since he hired a guy that took him 8 years to reach the ncaa and is only 12 games above .500.

I didn't say that. I questioned the wisdom of bringing in Sean Miller who might end up on probation with the NCAA just as I questioned the wisdom of bringing in Joe Golding. Focus, man.

I read on Twitter that Abilene Christian transitioned from D2 to D1, during which time they were ineligible to compete in postseason play. The links provided state ACU became eligible for D1 postseason competition in 2017. That being the case, it took Golding only two seasons to make the NCAA Tournament, with two appearances in the last three years.

Menzies wants the job, but I don't think he'll get it. In order of most likely to be the next HC I'd say...
Golding 50%
Jans 20%
Tang 15%
Keller 10%
Someone other than these 4 5%

I know man. My point is when we hired RT all everyone saw was 3 straight 20+ win seasons at a much tougher MW. Now that it didn't work out we want to point out to his entire coaching record and why it was such an awful hire.

Well we've seen Terry's style of basketball 1st hand and we can watch video of the style of play of most of the candidates. Maybe we can at least come to a conclusion on who we would like to have based on how well coached those teams appear to be.

I was never enamered with the Terry hire. I had never heard of him, seen him coach, nor did I know his style. To your credit, you did point out his record in the beginning Corona. I just gave him the benefit of the doubt given his recent run of success at Fresno St and given his stated reasons for the move to UTEP.

It was pretty obvious halfway through year 2 that there was trouble. I figured that after the great start that it was a player issue, however I never liked the way he handled playing time with Vila and Stroud. The team finished with a decent spurt in year 2.

By year 3 it became obvious that Terry was a poor Xs and Os coach and player utilization coach. Maybe he had better players or chemistry in the end at Fresno. Who knows.

I just want a coach that we can trust and that gives us a chance to win. Even better a coach that can do those things and get good recruits and allow them to be aggressive. With the amount we are paying our coach our president/AD need to get this one right.

It was actually our conversation at twin peaks after the utsa game that made me dig deeper into his career. You were right from the start.
Haha. Wasn’t trying to be braggadocious. I definitely remember being at Twin Peaks and having that convo.

Our coaching options were slim pickins that go round so I understand why CRT was the guy. A new guy comes in and it’s only natural to want to see the positives.

It’s also why I can understand why people look at Golding’s record and question why him.

I was looking at the Fresno board to see what their fans had to say about Terry's firing:

I found the following comment most informative: " I believe when Wainwright did not follow him to UTEP it played a big role in his lack of success there."

Seems like this was the Xs and Os guy for Terry at Fresno: https://gobulldogs.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/coaches/jerry-wainwright/1049

He was at marquette during their final 4 run.

I always found it so odd that Terry never drew up plays during the time outs, one of the assistants did.

What did you know about Terry back then that the rest of us didn't?

PG Bieniemy, White
SG Boum, Agnew
SF Kennedy, Dekoninck (WO)
C Onyema, Maring

? SF Hill, PF Williams, C Verhoeven

I would say we still need at least another PG and a starting PF. Otherwise we need to play 4 guards and 1 big.

I wonder if Maring would have signed knowing Tydus would stay? Glad he is here though. We need depth up front.

Khalfani Hill is 6'9" but if he will be with the Miners he will be a freshman. That would give the Miners two 6'8", two 6'9", and one 6'10" players. That's a good number of big men. No one seems to know if Hill's signed loi is still in place or if he's been released.

I don't believe he's with the team any more.
