Football As A Metaphor For Privilege - Alabama vs UTEP

What is the point of this drivel?

More schools have more money to spend than others.

  • Both, theoretically, can achieve the “dream” of winning an NCAA championship.
-They all have the same “chance” to win the national championship, or achieve the “dream.” --They both have the same hopes and aspirations. Both teams work just as hard.

Unless the Playoff is expanded to 16 teams, that is not true at all.

UTEP and Alabama doesn't have the same "chance" to win the Naitonal Championship.

Also, UTEP and Alabama don't have the same hopes and aspirations. UTEP's hopes and aspirations is to just go to a bowl game. For Alabama, just going to a bowl game wouldn't be a successful season.

I also can't say that Alabama and UTEP's players work just as hard.

True, but IMO those who spurn privilege (I'm not saying you do) are the ones unwilling to sacrifice/change to obtain it in the future or make it easier for their next generation. Sometimes it takes many generations/time or sometimes its just too difficult to attain right now due to certain circumstances (money, location, surroundings, culture, segragation, etc..). It sucks to be the ones to have to sacrifice, but once the ball gets rolling its hard to stop.

Its a privelege to be an Alabama football fan right now. Its a privelege to live in the U.S. too (otherwise we may be thinking about other more important things like food and survival). The good thing is that UTEP football could be like Alabama 25 or 50 years from now. Who knows. Things change. Power changes hands. That's what keeps us hoping and keeps some yearning for 'privelege' and better football.

Realistically, there are maybe 8 teams that have a real shot of winning the national championship. The vast majority of teams, including those playing in P5 conferences have no chance! Teams like Alabama have deep pockets and invest a lot of money in their football programs. In essence they are buying championships. They have money to pay the biggest salaries, have the best facilities, and an unlimited recruiting budget. This is not an even playing field. I’m not surprised that despite being undefeated, UCF was never considered for a BCS bowl.

People forget that most of the money that funds big-time football programs comes from the boosters or outside sports apparel contracts. You've either got the hookup with a big donor or corporate America. Every big team has their sugar-daddy these days. It is a different era now. https://www.chronicle.com/article/Colleges-Raised-12-Billion/235058 UTEP has neither. The fans need to really need to put their money with their mouths are. Where are the big boosters for UTEP?
