Lobos have a indoor practice facility

Or maybe it helped them win a bowl game. When was the last time UTEP won one again?

UNM is truly a basketball first school. They rather throw 60 million into the Pit than do anything for the football team. The sad part is even UNM knew they needed an IPF if they wanted any chance to be competitive in the MW.

i cant find when it was built. Anyone know when it was built???

it says that is 5million to build it , and the company who built it has a office in EL Paso.

Are you getting ready to whip out that checkbook out Fili?

UNM is stupid for investing in one.....said the team left behind in CUSA.
They’ve been in the same conference for 22 years and aren’t an expansion candidate for the Pac or Big 12. So whether they had built this or not, they’d still be in the MWC and will be for the foreseeable future. So good investment or not?

One of their conference member's spent more money buying out coaches than UNM spent on their IPF.

Well I think they just got it built sometime this year so it is brand new. People say having a indoor practice facility will help with recruiting. I just looked at UNMs recruiting and it looks just as bad as Uteps. So for this season it hasn't helped the Lobos.

Naw that shit is old. Built around 07-08.

Does UTEP need one?

This Nevada article provides productive debate as they strive to get an indoor facility:

""The important thing is I don't want it defined as just an indoor practice facility for just the football team," Sandoval said in February. "If we're going to build something like that, it's going to be for the students as well. It's a place for the students to have intramural sports, for the women's soccer team to be able to practice, so it really will be a multi-purpose facility that will benefit everybody. But it will allow for our football team to be able to practice indoors.""

You're wrong. It opened the year they broke a 45+ year bowl losing streak. Coincide?
I guess all their best players were freshman? Not like they had one of their best teams ever, played that bowl on their home field, and beat a 6-6 Nevada team who didn’t beat anyone good in their wins. Not a “coincide” or coincidence.

Best team in 20 years. First bowl win since the 60s. You would be surprised the kind of wonders announcing facilities and fundraising does for your recruiting leading up to the year its actually built. Prime example UNM.

Yeah, they have really put themselves in position to be scooped up by…..? Guess, they must have been team number 4 for Big 12 expansion? Maybe the Pac 12 considered them? Albuquerque once produced Brian Urlacher.

Oh wait, they’re in the same conference they’ve been in since 1999 and aren’t going anywhere better. All those facilities, still bad at football and basketball. At least their tickets are more expensive for the same results.

At least they've won two bowl games and some NCAAT games in recent times.

6 wins since UTEP last did. Still in the same conference, not wanted by anybody. At least they have a refurbished Pit. Must be nice to sit there as a fan and stay home like UTEP the last 7 years.

Your argument is that since they're still in the MW and have won ncaat and bowl games its a bad thing. Ok makes so much sense. How many G5 teams have made the move to a P5 in the last 20 years? Five or six.

I would take being in the MW, a pair of bowl wins, a couple of NCAAT wins over what we've done recently and where we are.

My “argument” is, they’re still in the same place they were and aren’t going anywhere, anytime soon. So what good did their investment in facilities produce? 2 NM Bowl wins and a few NCAA tournaments since they redid the Pit? That’s great!

Upgrading your facilities doesn’t guarantee anything. And in their case, they’re in the exact same position they were in 1999. Filing up their arena 50%.

The MW used to be considered the best G5 league and will most likely return to being the best G5 league. So there's really no where else to go.

Yes that's great. What have we accomplished in that time period? How many bowl games and NCAAT games have we won? Is our arena filled to 50%? Have we moved up in conferences?

If there’s nowhere else to go, you don’t need to improve anything, since that’s where you will be.

UTEP hasn’t accomplished anything. A decade of bad coaching decisions (hiring/keeping) and fans accepting mediocrity, is what’s doing in the department. Not an IPF, “cheap tickets”, or paying $800k for a coach.

Typical loser mentality. UNM is a flagship and has a top 50 TV market. If they had focused on football and actually being good at it they could have moved up to the Big 12. Still can now that the Big 12 is watered down. That's why they're finally starting to throw some money and beginning construction for football facilities.

They have no pro teams. It’s not that great of a market. Albuquerque offers futile recruiting grounds. Being in ABQ does not benefit the recruiting efforts of Baylor, Kansas, Cincinnati, or West Virginia. Even a watered down Big 12 is head and shoulders above UNM.

You don't need a pro team to join the Big 12. Hopefully New Mexico doesn't have that stupid loser mentality that's so prevalent nowadays of oh well we've reached as best as we can be so let's not do anything anymore.

All their latest expansion teams have better TV markets, recruiting grounds, and good programs. But you’re right, they will want UNM and Albuquerque for their handful on D1 recruits each year. Grand Rapids-Kalamazoo-Battle Creek TV market is higher ranked than Albuquerque. This is good news for Western Michigan! All you need is a TV market and facilities. Weird how WMU never comes up

Being a flagship and in the big 12 footprint helps too. Whatever man. They made their pitch to the big 12 and I'm sure they were told what they need to do and it looks like they're working on it.

Point is you can be a loser and tell yourself you're stuck where you're at or you can keep improving and be ready for the next round. Too bad many people I grew up with have the former mentality. That's why I distanced myself from all my childhood friends that I grew up with in EP.

Flagship of one the poorer, less educated states. Big 12 is really going to come knocking. Maybe the Commissioner will fall in love with turquoise jewelry and a “Christmas” burrito.

If only they were more like you and would stand around with their arms crossed saying "poor me I can't do anything."
