Matt Willms is out 2-4 weeks

So is Rhyanes going to be starting now or is somebody else going to fill his position?
I'd imagine Tirus Smith would start at the 5? but with his foul trouble issues, it would be smart to go small and start Paul Thomas at the 5 and go four guards let em run...

I'd also think Rhyanes would have to eat up at least 10 mins right? I don't see Floyd starting him or giving him major minutes. Two scholarship players taller than 6'7, barf....

This is what kills me about Floyd: He managed to lose almost every player he has recruited except for 1: A Center who makes Roy Smallwood look like Cal Ripken Jr, 2: a SF who’s best attribute is he can take a charge and 3: a backup guard who is neither a scorer, nor a facilitator.

My heart genuinely goes out to Wilms, because he has had the absolute worst luck. I hope he gets healthy quick because we need him to hit the boards hard when he comes back.

Omega and P. Thomas (especially) need to up their game now.

More snowball effect from that colossal turd the last 19 seconds of the Boise game. Get well soon Willms. Jones would have been playing big minutes already, and now starting.

I like small ball but not sure Tirus is ready for the minutes, nor am I at all comfortable with PT as our big. This is going to hurt chemistry development a bit. Hopefully we're looking at the short side of this injury time line. Would be nice for Willms to work his way back into the lineup with time to spare before conference starts. It's a stretch to say Matt could dominate CUSA, however he will make a difference for sure.

I dont think we have a choice now. Maybe its run and gun time ala 2015 with Winn, Morris, Lee, Omega and Artis. High scoring offense and pressure defense with team rebounding. I mean we have plenty of gaurds and SFs. This will cut down on fouls too maybe. I'm not that fond of the inside out game right now anyways.

I agree we don't have choice. But that's my point. It'll hurt chemistry in the long run with Willms out. But when he is healthy, I have no doubt he'll be a focal point in the lineup, which will once again shake things up chemistry wise. Just pointing out that this one might hurt an already limping dog in ways more than meets the eye.

We are so thin inside, we really have no other options but to play small. We will definitely have major problems rebounding the ball. NMSU is historically strong at rebounding, especially in the area of offensive rebounding. I have a feeling we will get killed on the boards once again. Paul Thomas is an average rebounder as it is against PFs, and now he will be going up against a group of true inside guys from NMSU. Same goes for Tirus. If I am game planning, I would go right after those two guys. We already know they are prone to fouling. After those two, we have zero behind them. I guess we will play Flaggert at the four. Awful.

I can't see this being about pt, per se, because Jones got a lot of court time as a Freshman. And as 8106 said, the likelihood of Willms getting hurt has always been high. Maybe Jones' dad is on some kind of ego trip and thinks his son needed to start, though.

Or, as has already been stated also, maybe they had a problem with CTF and the Joneses took the high road and didn't want to publicly roast him.

I actually think utep will benefit from run and gun but that's just me.... I think you will have to have Thomas at starting center and smith as backup... that's a lot of fouls waiting to happen--/ maybebthat will loosen up Some of the freshman...this team has talent

You don't think the arrival of tyrus smith and maybe him taking just a few of his minutes away had anything to do with it?

Yeah I agree I think tyrus would fit more in the PT Slot than C ..... not having jones is a huge loss! Anyone know what happened to him? Anyone think he was being recruited by a bigger school based on potential?

Tirus is a fighter. He's tough. Not real gifted at this point but he's the type of player Haskins would have loved. Getting him some experience right now will pay off in the long run.

Fully agree about the needed experience he will get. However, he gon gas quickly. We will be remembering ole Claude Britten as a Kenyan marathoner by comparison.

And for the record, I ain't knocking him. It's just going to be his weakness, his hurdle. Also, when tired, those fouls are gonna come quickly. He is the guy I was most intrigued by coming into the season, though.

CTF needs players now. He is up against the wall as far as I'm concerned. There is no time to grow at the moment. We need him now, but yeah if will be good for his future if he is here..

Small Ball time run and Gun, it could work if Floyd let's them run!
G-Harris
G- Osborne
G- Frazier
G/F- Wade
F- Thomas

I like the line-up and think the guys could play an exciting brand of bb. It'll be fun while it lasts. As a fan base we'll get all pumped about the style of play and the point production. The offense will become efficient, the defense will be like a swarm of bees and we'll probably beat a couple teams we "shouldn't". But this is what I've been saying in previous posts. Willms will heal up and there is no doubt Floyd will go back to business as usual with a more traditional line up. It's just what he does. Then it's back to the stagnant inside-out-back in-back out-whip it around the horn-take a desperation shot as time expires offense. I hope I'm wrong but everything is fairly predictable in how Floyd goes about his coaching.

He must have left either because of his dad, or because of Floyd. If this was about playing time, the odds of this happening were so high.
Correct me if I'm wrong but he and his father are mormon. There is a lot of pressure on mormon men to marry, be the sole provider to their wife/family and take initiative in the church and community. His father may have simply said he was time. Easy enough. If he would have just said so I think all of us would have respected his decision.

Of all the big men we've had leave now would be their time to shine. I'm glad we still have Smith! The only way Rhyanes gets in the game is to foul.
