Two days ago the conference decided to tweak its scheduling format by allowing the last four games to become a mini playoff series between the top teams.

Today it’s revealed that all 14 teams will be participating in the CUSA tournament. I like the idea because it will allow the #1 and #2 seed a straight path to the semifinals. Now more than ever it is critical to do well in the regular season. One to get placed in the top pod and second to only have to win two games in two days to make the NCAA tournament.

Good progress from the league.

Thanks JCorona, now I have only 4 Free articles left for the Herald Dispatch.

It’s both good and bad. CUSA needs to perform better OOC and beat quality teams.

It’s good because it gives better matchups for TV and “potential” at-large teams later in the year.

On the negative side, a team who had aspirations for a bid, could crash and burn, eliminating themselves. Also, if successful, other leagues will copy and CUSA will be back to square one.

The only problem is (besides UTSA) will will now be seeing every team at home every two years. Most teams we saw at home every year and teams such as Marshall and Western Kentucky we saw at home every two years. I really don't like that part.

I am curious how this is going to affect season ticket prices since we won't know how many of the last four games will be played at home.

Not a fan of a challenge because much like the ESPN Bracketbuster that they used to do, it eliminates mid-majors which was the opposite of the ideas intentions.

We all know that the future is going to give fewer opportunities to mid majors and the only hope Conferences like C-USA has is to schedule multiple road games vs P5’s in OOC and win.

It's always been that way. Mid majors have to cultivate the opportunities.

Seeing reports that CUSA will enter into a scheduling alliance with the Sun Belt and Horizon League.

Eh. That's not gonna help our RPI..
Yeah it’s not but it’s a start. I’m sure CUSA had to settle for this arrangement after being turned down by the stronger conferences. They do have a couple of top 100 teams that can boost our SOS and RPI if we beat them. From the CUSA board I found this comment.

Consider the top three team's RPI's over the past few years.

C-USA
2018: 1. MT (30) 2. wkcc (32) 3. ODU (74)
2017: 1. MT (34) 2. Marsh (108) 3. LT (116)
2016: 1. MT (77) 2. UAB (81) 3. ODU (116)
2015: 1. ODU (41) 2. LT (48) 3. UTEP (74)

SBC
2018: 1. ULL (65) 2. UTA (112) 3. GSU (116)
2017: 1. UTA (40) 2. GSU (106) 3. Ark St (113)
2016: 1. UALR (42) 2. ULM (104) 3. UTA (107)
2015: 1. GSU (54) 2. Ga So (111) 3. ULL (123)

HL
2018: 1. Wright (98) 2. UNK (111) 3. Oak (180)
2017: 1. Valpo (78) 2. UNK (85) 3. Oak (103)
2016: 1. Valpo (31) 2. Oak (105) 3. Green Bay (115)
2015 1. Valpo (56) 2. Green Bay (60) 3. Clev St (128)

Number of times a team has gotten in "at large" territory (which if we're being honest none of us are getting in if our RPI is in the 40s or higher):
1. C-USA (3)
2. Horizon (1)
3. SBC (0)

Avg. RPI of Top Teams
1. C-USA (69)
2. SBC (91)
3. Horizon (96)

Avg RPI of Just the Top Team in Each League
1. C-USA (45)
2. SBC (50)
3. Horzon (66)

There will be some years that they’ll have a top 50 team and other years we will have a top 50 team. Hopefully we can use this as a stepping stone to improve our overall conference RPI and then we can get some better conferences to schedule an alliance with.

Thx for the info Corona. I think the other conferences are getting a better deal. We need to 'schedule up'. I know it will take time, but if we win we can just do it ourselves.

WKU just secured a 4-year home and away with Louisville and Nevada a 2-year home and away with USC. Winning starts the cure.

The MVC for a few years schemed the RPI by playing weak teams on the road, traveling to places like Norfolk State for the RPI boosts. And it worked for a while and they got multiple bids. But now even a top 25 RPI isn’t a lock for an at-large mid major
