New DC Tom Mason?

Mason is a really good defensive coach. He did a really good job at SMU. Being the dc for a team that runs the run and shoot is no easy task. Your defense will typically be on the field for 40 minutes a game. Under those conditions its very difficult to play good defense, yet at SMU his defenses played very well. I dont care about Hawaii, his d played well early in the season and then fell off when Chow was fired. Hawaii has alot of structural problems it isnt a good situation.

Sorry, but I hope not. He has loads of experience..... experience of losing! He may very well be an ok coach, but he loses every where he's at, we need a proven winner, rather have a small college defensive guy who's won then a D1 coach who seems to always lose.

I don't either, it seems forced! Don't know what happened behind closed doors, but if Stoker came back with the quality of offensive coaches coming in and players coming back I'd feel alot more comfortable :/

I'm ok, but not thrilled with the hire. There's a reason he was 3rd on the list. I hope we have the personel to run this defense.

I think it's a good hire. From 1988-2008 SMU had one winning season and no bowl appearances. They constantly finished at the bottom of the standings and 1-11 seasons were the norm. After 2008 once Mason took over the defense the SMU team started winning games. SMU had four straight winning seasons that resulted in two CUSA west titles, One CUSA championship game appearance, Four bowl appearances that included three victories. They rode that winning momentum into the AAC. Sure he lost games as an interim HC but he wasn't hired here as a HC. If he duplicates the same success SMU had we will all be happy with him.

Finally, a voice of reason and fan who hasn't poo-pooed on this hire. Kugler probably knows better than the armchair coaches on this message board. I'm willing to give Mason his deserved opportunity before declaring his hire a mistake.

Given the defense the last 10 years... everyone deserves the benefit of the doubt lol... Who knows we might look back and be glad it all worked out this way... As the Miners win a bowl game next season...

He said in the presser that he had his reasons for the changes. Maybe he and Stoker were butting heads. Who knows? Considering this is choice #3, I think it's a pretty good hire. He's had some decent defenses, and that was working with a run and shoot offense. Kugler's clock-eating offenses should help improve any DC's numbers.

In the presser with the new OC, it sounded like he planned to throttle up the tempo. Could be interesting.

Mason has been fired from his last 2 jobs. His last job lasted 1 season, great hire Kugler! Kugler for Senior HR Manager after his stint as coach.

The coaches he worked for got fired. The coordinators are almost never retained by the new administration. This a good hire. I like it much more than the prospect of Flajole. Kugler went for the homerun and missed with Casteel, but Mason is a great backup plan. Pease and Mason are the best coordinators UTEP has ever had. Everybody take a deep breath and RELAX.

So now the question to me seems are we now hyped for next year ? Or are we going to have the one transitional year?

I'm hyped for football, our transitional year was Kugler's first year here at UTEP. It's about trucking forward and moving this football program in the upward arrow. To me Kugler just seems like the right guy for this job. You won't hear a complaint from me when it comes to Kugler. Basketball is another story every year is a transitional year with less and less expectations.

GO MINERS!

Mason the best DC UTEP has ever had? That is a big stretch. Just in recent memory, I would choose Patterson over Mason.

Patterson was the dc at UTEP when Mason was at SMU. In the three years playing in the same conference Patterson's defenses never ranked higher than Mason's defenses.

Final defensive rankings

2010 SMU 76 UTEP 102
2011 SMU 33 UTEP 89
2012 SMU 73 UTEP 82

That's right, you should never hire anyone who has been fired. That's why I wouldn't consider Tony Dungy, Jon Gruden, Mike Shanahan, or Bill Belichick.

Two things wrong with your comparison:

1) Mason had been on the job at SMU for what--5 years prior to those 3?

2) Put Patterson at SMU, more resources and fertile recruiting grounds, and it is my belief Patterson would do better than at UTEPIA.

So IMO, Patterson is better DC. He is currently coaching in the NFL, Mason was unemployed and fired from his last 2 jobs. Frijoles con chorizo, was a better choice but that was beyond our control as he left to the Eagles. Again, to me, if given the choice would prefer Patterson over Mason jar.

How do you know? Have you given Mason a chance to prove his worth? Oh...no...you haven't.

I don't, I clearly said it was of my opinion. I'm a Miners fan so I will support and attend the games given that Floyd sucks and there is nothing else to look forward to in UTEPIA.

It's a win-win, if he does well that's great. If he sucks, Kugler's head will be served on a platter, and we will get a new coach here.

Can't always just look at the fact a DC has been fired a few times. It's the nature of the beast. David Lee got fired several times and he's doing ok now. Last I read, so is Gary Nord.

Sometimes they learn as they go. Let's chill and give him a fair shot...

There are two kinds of coaches....those that have been fired and those that will be fired....its not something that's looked down on (at least among coaches)
