At the risk of infuriating Fili (the horrors!), as I didnt check to see who "won" the last basketball OPT before starting this one (yes, I'm ashamed), here is the OPT for our next Men's Basketball game, Wednesday at UCSB. Our last road game at Utah Valley didn't go so well, and even though UCSB had a similar record to Utah Valley last year, with the Gauchos finishing 16-15, UCSB is expected to have a much better season this year, as they were picked to finish 2nd in the Big West. They have also started 4-0, with wins over Portland, Fresno State, and SJSU. I'm not expecting a victory on the road, and if we play like we did against Utah Valley this score could get even uglier. I do expect us to a bit better than we were in that game, however, so the score shouldn't be quite as lopsided.

UCSB 84
UTEP 67

Why doesn't Golding wear Utep gear?? In my Twitter drama thread someone brought up Golding wasn't wearing Adidas gear.

You can't win consistently if you don't rebound. Especially on the road. Shooting comes and goes but rebounding is ALL desire. Ganas. If you don't put out the effort there, I question the effort in general. Con ganas ganas.
Offensive rebounding is all desire. Defensive rebounding is all fundamentals. The ball goes up, put a body on the man you're guarding, and he has no chance to get the board. Unfortunately, not only can't we shoot, we are not fundamentally sound, either.

Some goes for half court defense. His defense may be able to get steals, but I've never been impressed with his half court defense.

I agree. I will add that the lack of length at nearly all spots is also a problem, especially when playing four guards and one big. Plus, the defensive scheme that Golding runs often puts guys in mismatch situations for defensive rebounding. Golding made the switch last year to the four guard lineup after the debacle at NMSU to help the team score, but this year, he really only added Barnes and Bynum. While they are ok players on the offensive side, they aren't going to be able to help with defensive rebounding like Hardy and Powell did last year.

Again, I point to Golding's inability to bring in one or two true 3/4 types with length to provide immediate help in this area. Looking at the roster, Golding brought in two guys in Mbengue and Wickware who are no where near able to contribute. Hamilton and Jones would really need to step up in a huge way just to give this team a chance to compete against decent teams. I'm hoping the team shows something tomorrow against a good UCSB team, but the performance against Utah Valley was very disappointing for Golding. It is one thing when a team isn't able to make shots, but the way the team gave up on defense was a very poor reflection on Golding as a coach.

I think there is drama going on . With Golding not wearing Utep gear ,and he not following Senter, President Wilson, and David Terrell. I think he is gone after this season.

Interesting. Maybe that’s why they brought in Colin Deaver? To be a Liaison between Golding and administration?

But reading through Joe Golding’s contract, it’s a 5 year deal with 100% contract buyout in years 1-3 that becomes 50% in years 4 and 5. There is savings to the University by letting start year 4.

I lost count what year is he now?? It seems he has been here a long time.

Me too, but I dont see it happening. Too many missing links and what ifs. The poor recruiting is catching up.

I've never been a fan of his defense. I'm an inside out guy. I hate giving up all the layups and rebounds. I think the hedging with centers is dumb.

The contract is interesting. He hasn't received any bonuses I think, he does get a bonus for beating NMSU. I don't even remember if Utep has beaten NMSu.

In my humble view, I believe coach Golding will be here for the full 5 years. He should be in the top 3 teams this year and get to the final conference game. I expect the team should beat LT in that game. Being ready for conference play is critical. Now, next year will be next year. Lets Get behind this team, and will them to a conference championship.

I think he is gone. I bet he donated all his Utep gear to the goodwill, or sold it all in that garage sale Utep had. I bet this is what happened::

Golding: "hey Boss Senter let's talk extension??"

Senter " laughs at him "

Golding then unfollows Senter and Wilson on X.
Golding throws all of his Utep gear in the dumpster,

Senter picks up the gear and sells it in the garage sale. 😀😀😀😀

Offensive rebounding is tactical, defensive rebounding is a fundamental and just as important as shooting.

Our opponents have obviously noticed UTEP is not the best of rebounding teams they will play against, so instead of quickly getting back on defense they are sending at least two attacking the boards. It's worth the risk because UTEP is not potent (lack of a better term) in getting the "one and done rebound" and attack the other end. Our opponents see the "50/50 ball" (Golding's favorite term to use) on the boards.

Now a coin has two sides and to him, the "50/50" is cutting off backcourt lanes and go for the steal. Golding is great at that; however, older UTEP fans lived the Haskins experience, "Get the damn rebound!!". There is the offensive rebound is tactical; it's all position (coaches design to go after or fall back). Defensive rebounding is a must. How do you have a chance to score?

One UTPB big man, who could not "play above the rim", embarrassed Golding. I was ready to go jump on the Kane bandwagon and demand Golding's ouster, but it's a money and early OOC game.

So you're saying the Golding plan might be, if they get the rebound, steal it? But that means not getting back. Risky.
