OT: 4-year-old boy killed by family dogs in Lower Valley home

Dogs (especially German Shepherds) will eat dead humans. When I read this I wondered if the kid died accidentally in the trampoline and then the dogs ate him. Horrific tragedy.

I have a four year old daughter and three of the nicest outside dogs. They are not even pit bulls or german shepards and I'm stull very reluctant to even turn my head when I'm outside with her. I can't imagine the parents' pain, but I can see their stupidity. It's beyond belief.

It just sounds that it cant be true. Usually dogs are very protective if this kid grew up with these dogs. Dog wouldnt attack if kid wasnt bothering them. Unless these owners didnt feed their dogs ? But what a horrible thing to happened.

Pit Bulls

I have a few experiences and I absolutely hate pit bulls. That being said, like said above, even pit bulls are protective of children they grew up with. Something, unfortunately, doesn't add up here. Maybe the dogs attacked each other and the poor boy got caught in the middle.

On Facebook people say the breed doesn't matter, but I've never read of someone being mauled to death by 3 pomeranians and a chihuahua. I love all dog breeds, but the owner of a larger breed does need to be more careful with their pet. Of course some people LIKE to brag about their big dog that is aggressive or angry.

3 poms or chihuahuas don't pack the punch as other bigger dogs. That doesn't mean they can't be mean or aggressive. Stupid comparison brother.

That's actually my point. Dogs like dachshunds, pomeranians and chihuahuas aren't as strong. They can be MEAN, but can't do any damage on the level of the larger breeds. This is why the owners of these breeds have responsibility to take care of their dogs.

Dogs are dogs. El Paso has a lot of people who take in strays. There is a young lady at my church who takes in strays and a few months ago she had three of them in her car. Two got into a fight and as she was trying to break it up she got a very severe bite that needed a few stiches.

If those dogs grew up with kids, this would be bizarre. If the poor child got caught into the (dog) fighting, no doubt they would turn on him. Domesticated doesn't mean "will not bite or harm".

I'm all for the St. Francis approach to take care of the animal kingdom, however, a 6,500-7,500 sq ft lot is a little to small for 10 dogs of that size mentioned in the paper and expensive even if you can get a 50 lb bag of chow of $23-$25 at walmart. Not to mention the stench during the summer!

I can't speak to the really sad and unfortunate situation in the lower valley but dogs generally need to be socialized with people as well as other dogs. I've never had a bad incident with pitbulls. The ones I've been around have been really playful and submissive. I have run into incidents with owners who don't really put in a lot of time learning about their dogs behavior. It's been my experience that dogs have to be raised to be aggressive. Otherwise they just consider themselves part of the pack (family).
