OT: Texas vs Tech

Maybe it's just my old eyes but I sure didn't see many oldies like me in that crowd. Lots of middle age and YOUNG people there supporting their team.

Has El Paso lost all it's youth to Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, and other cities? Where are the young and middle aged UTEP fans? I mean, if LUBBOCK can draw them. For ****'s sake...
Back in my days at UTEP, from 85-89, the basketball team was always in the NCAA Tournament and often in the Top 25, and the football team improved from one win my freshman year to 10 wins and a bowl game my senior year. Students used to camp out for the free student tickets to the big basketball games. There were tons of young people cheering on the Miners.

However, since 1992, Miner Basketball has only made the NCAA Tournament three times and the NIT only a few times more, and Miner Football has rarely made a bowl game, despite the fact they the bowls have become the NCAA equivalent of every kid gets a trophy. There hasn't been enough consistency in either program to build a young fan base. In fact, we've been bad much more than we've been good. If we could have some sustained success in these sports we can start to build a fan base again - as long as ticket prices don't prevent the average fan from coming.

Beard has a pretty good coaching staff. He has 3 ex head coaches on his staff and still got beat by his former team. IDK if it was a good idea for him to take the Texas Job.

Texas has been the job for a solid up and coming coach to go get über rich at, enjoy all the advantages of “unlimited” resources at their disposal, then not meet expectations.

Football and basketball.

Yeah I don't blame him (although not everybody sees the world the same way) and I wish him the best. Time will tell though. The grass is not always greener in the end. He had a great thing going at Tech.
But in fairness, there was a reason the Texas job came open. They were overrated most of this season, because of Beard. IMHO

They still have it going with Adams. They look like an elite 8/final 4 team to me. Beard has some holes to fill.

There was a lot of hype about their transfers that hasn’t panned out, except maybe for Timmy Allen.

UTEP students generally suck as sports fans.

He also didn't build Tech into the dynasty it is right now in one season. Like you said time will tell, not only if he'll be able to build another powerhouse at Texas and if TT will sustain their success without him.

As someone who co-founded two orgs and supported 1, I can attest to this. No interest in sports at all, especially from the J town students.

Don't know the current UTEP demographics, are the J town students that big of a population? Basketball and football are not a driving force for most Mexicans and if it is it will be the NFL and NBA.

Also, I was not a J town student, I was from way further South of J town and in my almost 5 years at UTEP there were 2 season were the only bball games I would miss were the tournaments that students didn't get free tickets for and I traveled to Denver to watch my Miner loose to the eventual champion Maryland Terps. Not all students from south of the border are apathetic towards UTEP sports.

The Texas Basketball HC job is unique. It comes with a big payday, plenty of budget, and unrealistic mid expectations. No one expects too much from the bball team, unless they start making national headlines. Then they attract the attention of alumni and local media and the scrutiny of why are they not better with so many resources at their disposal. I would assume that is why Smart left.
