Has anyone seen any pick up games or have seen how the new players are doing

Trey Winn is a beast (maybe better than Hunter), Earvin Morris does not miss (making 3's all day long), Paul Thomas and Christine Romine play smaller than they are, Kelvin Jones is a true NBA talent but we will have to wait to see him play until next season, Lee Moore can drive it and shoot the 3 (him and Morris go at it the whole time), Flaggart is the same, Touchet is not fast enough, Omega is still a little out of control but lightning fast, did not get to see Artis play, Brodericks Jones is raw but athletic (needs some weight too), Vint is still a little soft. This year is going to be rough BUT with Kelvin Jones next year we will be VERY good. If Artis is as good as advertised we will be OK this season otherwise we are in trouble.

Thanks for the break down. Just curious about BJ, though. Alex from Miner Rush said that he thinks Jones could be a one and done. Said his skill level was highly underrated and that he will be an immediate impact player. Said his offensive game was going to be money this year. You have a bit different of a take. Any thoughts on this?

Appreciate the details -- did you watch them play, or hear this second hand?

Wow....dude chill out...does every one of your posts have to be negative/sarcastic? Or are you really just that much of a dick?
Its just the typical Floyd cycle. The basketball season finishes and of course we don't do jack crap in CUSA and get blown out in the NIT or lose in the CBI. During the offseason, all the players look bad ass in pick up games. Right after the Orange and White scrimmage, people on here start saying this and that player have improved so much, we looked great after the scrimmage and we will be a top 25 contender and make a deep run in the NCAA Tourney. The season starts and we will play a decent team in those tournaments, but we will play them tough but fade in the end. We will lose a player. We will either get swept by NMSU or split the series. We will lose by at least 10 points in the Pan Am Center, then NMSU will either win here, or we will barely beat them by like 4 points. Floyd offense will be boring and weak once again, and we will be a bad free throw shooting team. Floyd will be too stubborn to change anything because his system is amazing. Then comes CUSA play and we start to regress. The CUSA leader will sweep us easily, we will lose 1 or 2 games to the worst teams in CUSA. We will be in 2nd or 3rd place heading into the CUSA Tournament. We will win more than 20 games. We will win the first round, then lose in the 2nd round to a Western Kentucky or Middle Tennessee. Depending on how well our record is, we will play in the NIT and get blown out in the first round, or we will get invited to the CBI and decline the invite because we are too good for that tournament. Then everyone will be talking about how good we will be next year. Floyd will interview for a vacant job in a major conference. Then repeat.....

Mcswiggan is a tremendous talent. He can hit the NBA three, drive to the basket and play tough defense. At 6'7", he can play the two and three position with good quickness and very athletic just like Washburn but with more offensive skills. Brodricks Jones is not a one and done. He is not real aggressive but does have talent to probably go to the next level. He has great range on his shot but needs weight and to work on his footwork. I agree with Tuscon on Thomas and Romine. Thomas still shows great skill and will contribute this year. Romine can get rebounds, works hard and very athletic. He is limited offensively, so with Willms back a redshirt year will help him tremendously. Kelvin Jones, offensively, right now is probably our best big man. Has offensive moves like Bohannon but we will have to wait. Moore and Morris are almost identical with their play. Morris has the better shot but Moore can rebound it better. Didn't see Artis play but he looks big and strong. At 6'3" and a point guard, with his strength and what I hear, he can shoot the three and finish at the basket. We haven't had talent like that since Eddie Rivera at the point. We will finally have the players to play the teams like UAB, Middle Tennessee and LA Tech that have the 6'4' to 6'7" quick players. Those teams were always tough for us to play the last few years. The biggest question this year is will all this talent be able to mesh together? It should be fun to see though.

lol that is actually pretty funny.... but sadly some truth. But this is the year!!!

I appreciate all of the updates on the pick up games. There are certainly some things that you can gleam from them. I remember watching some games before the 2004-05 season. It was apparent that OT had been working on his range, shooting and hitting three pointers frequently during the games I saw. And while he only ended up taking 32 in 2004-05, that was a big increase over the 3 he took the previous year. I was also impressed with how hard that OT and JW were going at each other, despite the fact that they were only playing pick up games. It demonstrated how devoted and intense that always were out on the court.

On the other hand you can't place too much stock in such contests. During the same pick up games my friends and I were impressed with how fearlessly Vernon Carr would drive in amongst the trees, and predicted that he would have a good year and a very good career. The timid and overmatched player we saw when the lights were on and the stands were full did not resemble the kid we saw playing his guts out that day.

Similary, anyone who ever saw Jalen Ragland in pick up games and in practice was awed by how accurate a shooter he was. In just over two seasons, however, his best season three point shooting percentage was .281.

Again, I appreciate all of the info posted about the pick up games. It's the only data that we have now, and, as I pointed out with OT and JW, it can sometimes give you a glimpse into the upcoming season. But it's dangerous to base too much on how players look in a pick up game.

Do they know how to catch or defend a receiver for football? Sorry, I couldn't help it.

Na I would rather replace Stull. In terms of basketball, we need to bring back the 2nd best coach in UTEP history Tony Barbee. He put a high quality product out on the court. His offense was very entertaining to watch out on the court. Floyd's puts you to sleep.
where's Barbee coaching now?

Read it before but forgot, is Kevin Jones coming in next year as a freshman or from a Junior college as a junior.

The NCAA's new eligibility standards next year are going to really hurt the basketball program. I think its going to change how Floyd recruits. A prop 48 can redshirt .Next year prop 48's will be reffered to as academic redshirts.

Heard the games have been intense. Look for these boys to get us in the NCAA and pull a couple of upsets.
Yaaaaaaawn!!!! We here this every year with Floyd and nothing happens. He couldn't get us there with a veteran team and now he is going to do it in a rebuilding year....sure!!! UTEP football has better odds of reaching a football playoff game than Floyd reaching the NCAA's in basketball.
