Preferred UTEP OOC schedule (Basketball)

In another thread, I started talking about what I would like to see. How about you all?

For the sake of consistency, let’s say they will play 12 OOC games and the Haskins Classic is still happening. Let’s also say this is a base and not for any particular year. Doesn’t matter if the team is good or bad, just something you would like to see on a consistent basis.

3. Rotating H/A with UNM
4. Rotating A/H with Grand Canyon
5. Alternating game with 1 of the following- BYU, Nevada, Boise St, Utah St, San Diego St
6 & 7 - Haskins (1 Ivy League, 1 MAC, 1 Big West team)
8. Home game vs SWAC team
9. Road game vs Big 12 team
10. Road game vs Pac 12 team
11. Alternating game with SMU and Houston
12. Home game vs Southland team

Grand Canyon is a yawner. I’d like playing UNM more. Texas would be a home run if the UT System would throw us a bone.

I’m sure Utah St, Boise and Nevada would play home and home series with us. BYU and SDSU maybe not, but I would say my schedule is very realistic.

It would behoove UTEP to schedule games against MWC opponents for OOC with FB and MBB, especially with the aspirations of one day getting an invite to join. One of the best packed Sun Bowl games I remember was a ranked Boise St. barely getting by the Miners. I also remember how crazy the Don was against the Nick Fazekas-led Nevada teams. IMO the Don rocked more against Nevada than against the Calipari-coached Memphis teams.
Schedule a Tech or UT MBB/FB game every now and then.

For FB, I love the idea of continuing the games against Army and what the heck, toss in the Air Force and Navy every now and then too.

Long story short: establish a good relationship with teams from the Southwest: AZ, NM, CO and Texas.

Why would they want to play us?

Utah St home games last year: Montana St, Weber St, Denver, UTSA, St Katherine, and Eastern Oregon. UTEP is 99% of the time a better opponent than all of those schools.

Nevada’s is easily the best and they just came off of a solid couple of years. I’m pretty sure they would play a home and home with us, instead of UT-Arlington, Santa Clara, and Davidson, which they all did.

They play a home in home with UTA for recruiting purposes. Davidson is a very attractive opponent. You can make a good case all three of those schools are more attractive than UTEP.

Davidson - yes
Santa Clara - no NCAA appearances since 1996. They suck. UTEP is way better than them, by any metric
UTA - no appearances since 2008, only 3 overall. All while member of Southland. Even if they do it for recruiting, there’s no reason why UTEP couldn’t get the same deal. UTA is not a better program than UTEP.

Agreed and they have a great arena. Outside the big 12 schools in Texas I think only UH's Fertitta Center is nicer than the College Park Center.

They did. Then they fired Scott Cross and hired a guy UTEP passed on. They still get under 2,000 fans for most of their home games. Is that really considered good??

I’m saying they’d upgrade our OOC schedule — add ‘em to the list.

We played them here in 2015 and lost of course. I wouldn’t mind playing them every year or being in a conference with them.

You're such a hypocrite. They won 20 games three straight seasons. They didn't make the NCAA tournament. The AD fired Cross because he says he wanted UTA to be perennial tourney team. He set the bar high and set expectations. Its was a balsy bold move. If they don't win this year they'll probably be looking for a new coach although I think they will get it together. They make bold decisions to try to win which is what you're screaming about. That's why nothing you say has any merit. You peddle in misery porn. You have no solutions. You mock anything thats increased revenue. You don't understand it takes money and funding to fix things.

How am I a hypocrite? I stated facts. Their program isn’t good since they fired Cross and they get under 2k for almost all their games. Getting 1,500 a game is great if your arena holds 2k, not 9k.

I did think it was an okay move to fire him and bring in someone else, as that takes balls. We know that had Stull been AD, he would have hooked him up with a lifetime contract. Their results were fine for UT-Arlington and traditionally they’re not good enough for UTEP.

We expect NCAA tournaments every once in awhile here. Their 1000 fans don’t. They were a good program, now they’re just another team.

At worst, I think UTEP is capable of scheduling 2-for-1 (road vs. home) deals with Power conference teams. It would be nice to always have a home game against a Power conference team in a season.

If UTEP would schedule 2-for-1 deals with Pac 12 and Big 12 teams, then if they scheduled a 2-for-1 with one other Power conference team (let's say the SEC, or maybe even the Big 10), they could have a situation where they typically have one home game and two road games against Power conference teams in a season. I think that would be good.
