Much talk had centered around beating ODU and earning the third seed to avoid MTSU in the semifinal game. With good reason both ODU and UTEP fanbases had expressed similar feelings. The Blue Raiders are the best team in the conference and should have locked up an at large bid given their overall record and top 30 RPI rating.
With the way the committee looks down on low and mid major conferences it's better to punch in the auto bid. Middle Tennessee will not want to leave their fate in the committee's hands. They are expected to finish in beast mode.
Back to UTEP before we can get to the semifinals their is another important game in the quarterfinals. With all the current success we've been experiencing we take it for granted and chalk it up as a win.
The #3 seed will faceoff against the winner of six vs eleven.
The way the games played out tonight with RICE beating Marshall as of right now that #6 seed is UAB. They own the tiebreaker over Marshall. UAB host FIU on Saturday so will most likely remain at that spot.
While UAB had been reeling lately they are still a big threat in their home city. Plus UTEP and UAB always seem to have close down to the wire games. We have a much better chance to advance to the semis playing the winner of 5 vs 12 which at this point will be either us or RICE in the five seed.
The eight and nine seed matchup will most likely be WKU vs Charlotte or UTSA. I'll give the edge to WKU in either of those games. WKU did knock off the #1 seed UAB last season playing as the #8 seed. Anytime the "100 miles of hate" happen you can throw records out the window. The basketball gods might smile down on us and eliminate MTSU for us.
That's all I got.
