Tarke drops 22 pts 9 rebs 3 assists 2 of 6 3 pts at Duke

Those are great numbers.

He never found his groove here but I’d say that was as much a result of his injuries, and...when he did play, it was so sporadically that he never got into a rhythm with his teammates. He just seemed out of sorts. It was evident how explosive he was though.

I watched Eze play a couple times too. I think he’s averaging 9 points and 3 or 4 boards a game. In the two partial games I’ve watched, he probably blocked 4 or 5 shots and altered 6-8 more.

Not sure why Terry doesn’t see in some of these kids what others do.

Just adding to the Terry mystery, I saw Deon Stroud played 29 minutes for Fresno St, scoring 13 with 3 rebounds. It is just a one game sample against a marginal team, but you can't help but question last year's results. Tarke looked like an all conference player today against Duke; and last year he couldn't beat out the likes of Vila for playing time. I do know injuries were a factor, but good grief that is tough to rationalize.

Terry’s problem was that he never settled on a rotation. Players need stability and predictability once the season begins. Terry never allowed players to settle and made irrational decisions like giving Vila more playing time than players like Tarke.

Exactly. And how is Stroud doing as the starting SF at Fresno St?

I know what CRT saw. It was Vila, Archie and maybe Kennedy too. I hope Kennedy works out, but there was really no need to recruit him.

In this day and age with all the transfers coaches need to give more YOUNG talented players a chance (especially if they recruit them out of high school). Give them some minutes in most games. If they play well then play them more. For older players it can be tough if they are injured or other players are just better

I would still rather have Stroud and Ezeagu, but thats the way it goes. We lose something like "the most talented player on the roster" and a "freight train when it gets moving" for whatever reason.

Next guy that needs to play a few minutes or more is Onyema. Now that this year is a wash then let him grow or he may be gone too.

Yep.

And in regards to Onyema, I completely agree. Give the kid as many minutes as possible, within reason, and let him develop early so that he is a contributor for 3 plus years, while also minimizing the possibility of him bolting for somewhere else willing to give him a shot.

Starting next year its highly likely that there will be a one time transfer waiver for all players. Kids will start getting poached left and right. Up and down. Terry has yet to make anything out of his freshman recruits, so let's hope he plays his cards right.

I think a lot of this is a function of who you play with and the system you play in. A lot of 20+ scorers on 3-25 teams who can't make their teams winners and a lot of 7ppg players on NCAA tourney teams. In the end what you average and how you look in a game means little if you can't win.

I complained all of last year about how Terry used his bench. Tarke struggled in the first couple of games he played, and found himself at the end of the bench. I personally thought that after those first couple of games, when he did receive the chance to play he did so with energy and enthusiasm, and did have some very good minutes for us last year. Unfortunately, like the rest of the players Terry decided to place on his bench, playing good minutes when you got the chance would result in absolutely no reward. Tarke could play really well in a game, and then not see any minutes for the next several games. I have no doubt that he could have provided much more spark than Vila did.

Tarke was not alone. Hawkins outplayed Lathon for weeks before finally getting thr starting nod. Stroud would constantly come in and provide a spark, whether with scoring, offensive rebounding, or a spectacular play in the first half of a game, and not see any time in the second half. Efe would put up a double double one game and receive maybe 5 to 10 minutes the next. The list goes on.

It seems that Terry decides on his favorites very early in the season, and nothing that anyone does the rest of the year has any impact on their ability to receive more minutes. As a result we lost some good talent that could be playing for us right now.

Maniac. I think everyone on this board feels exactly as you do about Terry. It's just insane that we all see what he can't. If he doesn't give Onyema immediate minutes he'll flee the scene in a hurry. Terry has some talent again, so he'd better not destroy it again. We all saw the keepers vs UTPM. Did he?

Why does the schedule change from Sul Ross to Arizona Christian without any explanation. I don't really care which one they play, but this is just an ongoing head shaker with their mysterious unexplaied zipped lip moves.
Can we expect any clarification on who tested positive and with the quarantine in place is a Dec 3rd game even possible?

Is this really an issue with you? You do know there's a pandemic? Maybe Sul Ross was unable to meet the CUSA requirements for testing. No schools reveal who tested positive. You will never see that.

It must be an issue with me or I wouldn't have posted it. If Sul Ross had a problem that doesn't have to be a secret does it? Can't give you a n y specific examples, but I've seen names of players and/or coaches mentioned who have tested positive.

Numbers on a team that was clearly overwhelmed. Duke was playing out of sorts and the three ball kept the score closer than the game really was.

He played the 2nd most minutes and jacked up the most shots. Only 5 players accounted for Coppin’s scoring.

Granted, he did put up the most shots but he also shot 45% from the field. At that rate, gotta keep jacking it up.

Jamaure Gregg is a senior at Northwestern State. He played at America's high school for coach Brooks and was the El paso player of the year in 2017. He put up 21 and 8 against La Tech.

Privacy laws keep schools from releasing names of those infected. The 24-year Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) prohibits doctors from sharing your medical records. HIPAA includes public entities like universities. Any individual names you read at this point will probably come from media reports or the athletes themselves.

Privacy is a "helluva drug". Gets violated daily by public personnel but the media is the demonic entity that gets blamed all the time.

Not really. Hawkins had an attitude problem.

That might be true, I don't know. I have no idea as to the personalities of the players on last year's team. But I stand by my statement. After the first couple of games, in which Lathon played solid, Hawkins played much better than Lathon in the minutes he was given, but rarely received many minutes. Finally, some time after Lathon's horrific showing in Hawaii, Hawkins finally got the starting nod. This is saying nothing of their respective personalities, just what I observed on the court.

Interestingly, when Hawkins was fighting for minutes he was aggressive, hounding players defensively and attacking on offense. He played like a guy trying to win a starting spot. After winning that spot, he was much more timid, playing like he was trying not to make a mistake and lose that spot. Too bad. Early season Hawkins played pretty well. Mid to late season Hawkins played poorly. Fortunately Lathon regained form the last few games, helping us to win enough games to make the conference tourney.

TARKE!!!!!
Just made it back to back 22 point games today in George Washington game.
WOW; how it hurts.

Had 8 more boards (half of them offensive), 2 steals, shot above 45% again from the field, was 5-6 from the line, in 33 minutes of play.

Glad he’s doing well. Thought he handled his “demotion” here at UTEP well. One had to know he was frustrated but he never showed it. Was a team guy.

He must be healthy and in a much better position within his team. I think he was caught in between positions here at UTEP, had injuries and had a coach that is not great at utilizing players well enough.

Sadly, I think this was the key part of your post: "... had a coach that is not great at utilizing players well enough." I was a Tarke fan. I thought the kid had tremendous upside. But ... coaching.

Amazing isn't it. Just a head shaker. It's like Terry had them playing mentally handicapped ♿ with some kind of "do it my way or the highway".
So, now we have evidence that what most of us saw with Tarke, Archie and Stroud was real and he was stubborn and blind. I'm OK with Lathon and Hawkins leaving still thought Ezeagu was worth trying.
Once again; he had better get Onyema into the mix ASAP before it's too late.

It really is a head scratcher. Feels so much like Floyd 2.0! So many of these kids have talent, but for some reason it just doesn’t manifest under the coaching here at UTEP.

Through five games here are Tarke's numbers:
22 pts 9 rbds
22 pts 8 rbds
15 pts 8 rbds
12 pts 10 rbds
33pts 10 rbds

Terry had better get a vision test and a brain scan quick or he'll miss out on more treasures this year.
Haven't checked on Stroud, Lathon, Ezeagu and Harris, but this by itself points out the disaster that Terry is.

Milwaukee plays their 1st game at K-State tomorrow.

When Tarke was out on the court in a miner uni, he looked lost many times, why?

Is CRT's schemes complicated? Does it allow a player to ad lib so to speak?

Or just how in the hell does a good character, hard working, uber athletic player like Tarke struggle at UTEP? You reward players who bust their ass and have tremendous potential, not cut them after one year?

Tarke is gone but Terry can't get past mid majors of similar or slightly better OOC or IC play. I don't mind losing to Saint Mary's but a) UTEP had better players but couldn't stop Gaels offense which was simple attack the basket basketball, basically. b) Can't protect the perimeter and perimeter shooting at the other end is inconsistent c) Terry is just getting flat out out-coached, period.

Through 3 games, Kaden Archie is averaging 17.7 and 4 per game, shooting a blistering 62.5% from the field. Not saying he and Tarke would have contributed to the same degree here, but damn, these kids are majorly contributing at their respective schools now. Sucks because we just happen to be lacking...well, a couple more scorers. And rebounders. Archie is doing his damage in only 25 minutes a game. If only...

Its because he passed the ball after he got a Defensive rebound. The UTEP offense is whoever gets the ball goes one v one on the other end.

I'm half joking

At this point, I guess we're lucky Vila stuck around. He would be averaging a double-double, and shooting 45% from three point land at another school. ;)

The even more bewildering part is that Terry had Tarke for a full year in practice to see what he could do, and work to adapt his schemes to maximize his strengths. Yet, the few minutes he played, he looked tentative and was super turnover prone. They say a change of scenery can do wonders, but this is not a good look for Terry and UTEP.

I suspect that Tarke and the others all felt like they were always "on trial" and therefore too uptight to execute their talents without scrutiny. Never comfortable enough to relax and play their game.
I always wonder if Terry and/or Senter read these posts and see how disgusted their fan base is.
