The Eyes of Texas the next sacrifice to satisfy the mobs?

As much as I despise the school in Austin I hate to see them potentially losing a tradition.
"The Eyes of Texas is also the alma mater song of the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP). At the time, UTEP was called Texas College of Mines and Metallurgy (TCM). It was adopted in 1920 by the student body after UT (Austin) had declared it their school anthem. UTEP is the second oldest academic component of the U.T. System, having been founded in 1914."

You have to wonder, as toxic as everything is now, what are we doing that's going to be cancelled from the History Books 200 years from now?

What if 200 years from now the world has no borders or barriers and there is one currency and one economy? And the citizens strike Bush, Obama, Trump, etc... from all books because they condoned borders.

Just a thought

I don’t care about 200 years from now. Hitler was one of the worst humans to ever walk the earth and he’s constantly talked about. Obama will always be spoken highly of because he was the first black president. Trump will always be talked about because of everything that has happened since he’s been president.

Maybe their negatives will be highlighted more, but you can’t erase them from history.

Did you make it to the Texas Cowboy Pavilion on the virtual tour?
It won't let me skip to that section, for some reason (using Firefox; I would have to let the whole thing play to that part). But if it pertains to the minstrel show, I'm aware the song's debut was at a minstrel show to raise money for the university athletics.

But the song itself is not racist. There are no racial connotations for the people singing the song at their games.

Edit: Finally was able to watch it. I stand by what I said.

People can and someday probably will try to erase parts of history they don't like. The latest effort now is to burn all books written by white people. I'm in the middle of a Tony Hillerman mystery right now so I hope they let me finish it before they burn it.

For all the younger, middle aged and older (including all vets); imagine you are living in the four corners region of the U.S., Covid-19 is breaking out worse per capita than anywhere else globally and for several generations you've been begging the government for running water and sanitation and it's needed now more than ever to keep corona virus away.

You live in Texas and are declared a sovereign nation but you can't have gambling casino's. Gun toting people are walking around with high powered weapons in most capitals, declaring a new Libertarian movement (some wanting another domestic civil conflict to divide the states) but you can't even make money off widowed Mrs. Wilson who has her dead husbands huge pension and a lot of time on her hands? Imagine you are tired of the alcoholism rates in your tribal community and the chief and his posse block the in roads to the beer trucks saying to turning around after civil discussion about limiting alcohol on tribal land goes sour. What do the U.S. courts do? Forces the tribal community to allow the beer trucks in.

But dangnabbit, whack jobs can open up am endangered wild animal safari and petting zoo if they have the private funds right smack in Waurika, Oklahoma (FYI, The Navajo Nation Zoo and Botanical Park is the only one in the entire U.S) but no one will fund running water and sanitation for these people?

They used to play it after basketball wins long ago. I think they stopped playing it sometime around 1992. It was actually pretty embarrassing cuz literally no one knew the words to it at the games

No, I'm not going to pretend that The Eyes of Texas is a racist song and throw it under the bus.

Somebody, somewhere needs to start saying no to the mobs, otherwise the demands will never stop.

This is UTEP's spirit song, too.

Who is going to say no? Not the coaches, certainly. They need the players to win and keep their jobs.

I’d be surprised if UTEP players don’t also make demands.

I’m a UT grad. I love my school. Sports used to be a fun diversion — entertainment. I’m losing interest. I suspect many die hard fans will vote with their pocketbooks.

That's the problem. There are many people who don't know anything about history.

That’s what I don’t get about today’s world. This is not new information. Robert E Lee, Sam Houston, and Stephen Austin did what they did and it’s been available for decades and decades. They didn’t get uncovered as child molestors last week.

When you have a situation like Bill Cosby, when new information comes to light, then yeah, totally get their names off of shit. But these old historic figures haven’t done anything new for centuries. Just think about it, before the internet and video cameras, how many more famous people did messed up shit to others? Probably more than we would like to know.

Academics and intellectuals state that it is not normal that a country like the U.S. put up statues of confederate generals since the Confederacy lost the war and were factually not even effective generals and a handful despised by his own troops?! (this is a slippery slope argument because what about the Native Americans? They didn't start the war for western expansion and lost. War was declared on them, but I digress). He is conquered and ineffective for the betterment of humanity, is he not?

Anyways, but we're dealing with facts. This is the creation of right wing christian zealotry? How? You go and poke and poke and poke at small groups who have internal identity issues and so they sued to get this put up as a big middle finger to the christian right. Once again, stupid people who do things against their own better interests and crap like this happens.

This is indeed a very slippery slope albeit a very particular one. Speaker Nancy Pelosi has drafted legislation that would remove 11 Confederate statues.

Ok fair enough as she may please, but why wait until now? These statues have been in place for how many decades? If these statues have been hurting people, why has Pelosi taken until 2020 to draft legislation as opposed to any year that she has been in congress (since 1987)?

Matter of question is why now in 2020 does anyone feel that this is the point in time to take them down?

Comfort in acting or speaking up in numbers, bandwagon, votes, etc..

A result of 2020 is definitely going to be the rise of HBCU's. There will be four and five star recruits in both revenue sports sign with HCBU's. There is already a push for this to happen. They aren't going to get every African African American blue chip but they will get a percentage that would be unfathomable even last year. I think it the next five years the rise of the HBCU's will be among the most fascinating thing to watch in college sports.

Nah — the elite players want to go to the NFL. They’ll continue to flock to the coaches that can get them there.

I'm sure we'll see a few major recruits head to HBCUs, but not enough to create powerhouses. Even on a conference level for more than a year or two.

Plus, they'll need other talent around them anyway, especially in football.

I am curious to see which teams are able to make something of it, but don't expect long-term widespread results.
