Three Thoughts after WKU loss

1.) The defense played extremely well.

2.) Kugler recruited a Kicker who had zero field goal attempts in Junior College and only 6 field goal attempts during high school. He missed all 3 field goal attempts tonight and we lose by 1. Beyond ridiculous to go into a season with someone as inexperienced as Viles as your kicker.

3.) Natkin’s offense has been shut out in the 2nd half of every single game that he has been our offensive coordinator. He has not scored a second half point in 6 quarters. He also got shut out in 3 out of 4 quarters tonight. And some of you threw a fit because he was not named Interim Head Coach?

Very frustrating game because the defense held them to 15 points and we still lost the game. And reading #2 even makes it even more frustrating. We are the Tampa Bay Bucs kicking game of college football.
 
BTW, Viles was not even signed until right before the season started. At some point this summer, did Kugler walk into the office and say “Oh $hi#, we forgot to sign a kicker”?

I mentioned back on Signing Day how we still didn’t have a kicker. Do we not have a recruiting coordinator? Two years ago on this board, during recruiting season, I posted that it would be a good idea for us to recruit a kicker then so that we could redshirt him during Mattox’s Senior Year, then he would be ready to go this season. Instead we waited about 20 more months before we signed Mattox’s replacement.

2: if these stats are true this is unforgivable on Kugler’s part. I can’t see a program having extra kickers on the roster because if you also use an extra one for P depth that’s 2 scholarships you are wasting. But I could see a Grey shirt at least.

3: Aside from those couple of drives where they regressed to running on 3 downs I feel like they opened up the offense a little more. Those penalties and missed FGs were the main reasons why the offense didn’t put up points, so I don’t blame Natkin. Hey did run a lot of 3 and 4 WR sets.

I was dissapointed with how many deep passes Greenlee overshot. But that’s been the norm since he’s been here.
 
The backup kicker was warming up after second miss. I know he missed the last one. The defense did a hell of a job tonight. Some play calling was questionable, overall better than in past.

1 kicker
2 penalties
3 Natkins play calling. Most of the game was good but there was three calls I just don’t understand.
3rd quarter 2nd and 1- throw the damn ball and get the yard on third down if you have to.
4th quarter 3rd and 4 throws a 25- 30 yard home run ball. Don’t we have any 5 to 10 yard pass plays.
4Th quarter 3rd and 12 and we run what the hell is that.

Anyone know about the differences both showed after the game? Word had it that WKU thought they had an easy game?
 
USM game will be great. USM always brings a gang fight. And I mean that in a good way.
 
I'm lost at how we don't have a kicker. Kugler could've stuck his head out of his office and grabbed any kid from ELP on campus and we would have won. Wow. Just wow.
 
Simply put CSK never game a damn about kickers, I believe he felt anybody could handle the job.
 
There was something nostalgic about seeing Mike Price roaming the sidelines. It brought back some good memories of when life was less complicated ten years ago.

I agree. Seeing Johnnie Lee Higgins was great too.
 
BTW, Rice lost by 37 AT HOME to Army yesterday. We went to Army last week and only lost by 14. What a terrible loss that Rice game was for us this season.

We do have another kicker, in fact the plan was that he was supposed to be handling all of the shorter field goal attempts entering this season.

Not sure. For the time being, we still have a really bad offense that can’t score after half-time adjustments are made against it. For what it’s worth, we might be slightly improving as the season goes on(particularly om defense) and Rice might be getting worse. Watching Bailiff finish this season might be an alternative to seeing what it might have been like had Kugler remained.
 
Watch the backup kicker at halftime, I wouldn’t trust him to make a 20 yarder. Most of his kicks were misses
 
I was seated at the 30 yard line. All of his kicker were a low trajectory and they looked like they had a weird spin to them. Didn’t look end over end.
 
The first one was up and just a terrible miss. The second was a horrible looking kick that looked dead in mid flight. The last was just ugly. It never had a chance and looked like a wobbly pass to the point I wondered if it had been tipped. The entire crowd made a huge sound of disappointment
