Trouble in Aggieland

They also had highly touted transfer QB Tyler Matthews quit the program saying that the way things were handled inside the Aggie football program made him want to quit, which he did. He said it was not because Rogers (the arrested one) was named number 1.

And another back up qb left the program? Is that correct? Playing our fiercest rival with their back against the wall with nothing to lose is concerning. Kugler needs to tell them to play disciplined, watch the trick plays, and don't get out of position. A team like this will... 1) Play conservative and don't get hurt and build up for conference or 2) F IT!! This is our most hated opponent. They stole one last year, they out gun us up and down the line and at every position so bring out the kitchen sink, put dog shit in some paper bags and light the mothers near their locker room doors, ask Gov. Martinez to call TXDoT and ask for highway construction reroutes on I-10 so every fair weather miner fan ends up at Sunland Park Track & Casino instead of the Sun Bowl....What?! She's done it before! And threaten every NMSU student who commutes and lives in El Paso to wear crimson saturday or they'll lose their in-state tuition!

Tyler's next program will be his fourth in D1 and he's might not be done.

It is surprising to read the comments at the bottom of this article, that when Matthews transferred away from TCU, that there were some TCU fans who thought Matthews would beat out Boykin for the Starting QB job. Boykin then went on to finish 4th in the Heisman voting that year:

This article brings up a consistent trend of Matthews quitting at the end of QB competitions. As mentioned, he has now quit on 3 different teams. If I was a fan of NMSU, I would be concerned that NMSU has had such a high number of QB's quit their Program over the past couple of years, but I would doubt that the blame should fall on them for this situation. Even in today's Las Cruces Sun News, Coach Martin said that he wished Matthews would have stayed. Matthews Brother is a Grey Shirt QB with NMSU, it will interesting to see if this has any impact on him staying. Oh well, that's their problem.

To bad for Coach Martin. He's been nothing but a class act for this rivalry during his tenure here and came in to a bad situation. After experiencing Hal Mumme, who made the rivalry nasty and ugly, I don't want the rivalry to ever go back to those days again.

Brought SEC coaching nastiness to the rivalry. Made UTEP use outside facilities, smack talked Price, said UTEP football has a nice football stadium ONLY because of the Sun Bowl (he was bothered by Memorial Stadium facilities, or lack there of, but Sunland Park Racetrack owner Stanley Fulton came to the rescue to keep him happy). That was just a few I can remember. Price kept his cool and his mantra was never to be disrespectful of a coach and the team, just don't fear them. The bigger picture that Mumme did not see when he arrived to Cruces was that A) The state funneled most of its money to UNM and B) Not much local community support and Mumme literally was spending more time hitting up donors and money folks across New Mexico rather than devoting more to recruiting (unlike Price who got Stull to allocate more money for Texas recruiting so he could "shake the hand of every high school football coach in Texas"), and this was just was reported in the media. Mumme had a hard time adjusting to NMSU athletics and the area as a whole and usually let stuff come out of this mouth without thinking first and was frustrated to see UTEP and UNM make major capital improvements to athletics and NMSU couldn't do the same thing and couldn't get the program turned around. Mumme kind of went crazy during his final year at aggieland. I'll never forget one student telling me that they saw him walking around the campus in pajamas, looking disheveled and talking to himself. The student told me Mumme actually came up to him and started talking to him (this was leading up to a game against BSU) and saying something like he doesn't know what he's going to do against them or something along that line.
