Brought SEC coaching nastiness to the rivalry. Made UTEP use outside facilities, smack talked Price, said UTEP football has a nice football stadium ONLY because of the Sun Bowl (he was bothered by Memorial Stadium facilities, or lack there of, but Sunland Park Racetrack owner Stanley Fulton came to the rescue to keep him happy). That was just a few I can remember. Price kept his cool and his mantra was never to be disrespectful of a coach and the team, just don't fear them. The bigger picture that Mumme did not see when he arrived to Cruces was that A) The state funneled most of its money to UNM and B) Not much local community support and Mumme literally was spending more time hitting up donors and money folks across New Mexico rather than devoting more to recruiting (unlike Price who got Stull to allocate more money for Texas recruiting so he could "shake the hand of every high school football coach in Texas"), and this was just was reported in the media. Mumme had a hard time adjusting to NMSU athletics and the area as a whole and usually let stuff come out of this mouth without thinking first and was frustrated to see UTEP and UNM make major capital improvements to athletics and NMSU couldn't do the same thing and couldn't get the program turned around. Mumme kind of went crazy during his final year at aggieland. I'll never forget one student telling me that they saw him walking around the campus in pajamas, looking disheveled and talking to himself. The student told me Mumme actually came up to him and started talking to him (this was leading up to a game against BSU) and saying something like he doesn't know what he's going to do against them or something along that line.
