UTEP mentioned in New College Football Playoff Expansion Proposal

Does anyone else have this earworm rolling around in their heads when they heard the words "UTEP" and "playoffs?"

So the proposed 12-team college football playoff would guarantee each Power 5 conference champion a spot, whether deserving or not (PAC-12). The Group of 5 would only be guaranteed one spot, even if more than one conference champ is deserving. That leaves six at-large available. But don't forget the independents, specifically Notre Dame. They already have a built-in reservation in the current playoff system, and prior to that the BCS, again whether deserving or not. And those remaining at-larges? No doubt they'll all go to Power 5 conference teams and the American Athletic Conference (the so-called Power 6 conference). Will we ever see two or more Group of 5 teams in the "expanded" college football playoffs? Two maybe, at best, but never more than that.

Right now there is no possibility of a G5 making it to the playoffs so I guess this is the best outcome.

I would like to see a G5 National Title game. G5 football is the only level of NCAA sports in which no team has an opportunity to play for a title.

I agree, but 2 would be better than none, and at least they would have a chance to prove it on the field against one of those teams. They would never get the chance otherwise. Also the excuse of the Power Teams losing to them in a bowl would be negated because it would be an actual playoff game instead of just a bowl game. So, the constant excuse of then not being up for the game would be thrown out the window.

Was reading on the Athletic that Notre Dame Cannot get a bye (top 4 seed).

Only winners of Conference Championship Games can get a Top 4 Seed.

I can't access The Athletic articles (not a subscriber) but did read that on another site. I can't believe that will end up being the final guidelines on seeding. I'm sure there will be some language put in that enables Notre Dame to secure one of the top 4 spots. They'll be something put in that says if the Irish are ranked higher than any of the top 4 conference champions, they'll get a top 4 seed. Similar to how the proposal is now that the top six conference champions will receive automatic berths (notice the word BERTH, NOT BIRTH!) This opens the possibility that one Power 5 conference champ won't necessarily receive an automatic spot in the playoffs. Highly unlikely, but definitely a possibility.

The 5-12 seeds will play Home games with seeds 5,6,7,8 being the host of 9-12.

There will be bowl tie ins for the Quarterfinals and Semi finals.

Is this the beginning of the end for the bowl system? I am sure there will be bowl games going forward, but the Bowl System is definitely taking a hit and there will be Bowl Casualties.

No doubt, that in the next 10 years or so it will be a 16 team playoff then a 24 team playoff after that. Thats just the natural progression of every playoff thats ever happened.

Maybe even an NIT type System way down the road.
