It appears UAB will awarded the 2016 C-USA Basketball Tournament, after hosting it in 2015. All the AD's of the schools (not bidding for the tournament) apparently feel sorry for UAB and its fans for the idiotic decisions made to get rid of their football program, just to bring it back three months later. While I am very glad for UAB and its fan base to have kept their football program, it certainly doesn't mean they deserve to host this tournament in back-to-back seasons, and I scratch my head as to why the conference believes they should be compensated as such.

One thing, all this talk about free UAB and this and that. Well before any of that happened, nobody showed up! Lets hope they actually do show up for their FB and BB games...

They have a few things going for them. As far flung as this conference is UAB is pretty centrally located. Also they have seperate facilities for the women's and men's tournaments. The two big negatives UTEP will always have is how far UTEP is from the other cusa schools especially the eastern schools. Its hard for the other fan bases to travel to El Paso. The second is playing the womens tournament in memorial gym. Its basically an auxillary gym like every school has its not an adequate venue to host tournament games. This will be remedied when the arena is built downtown and mens games can be played there and women's games at the Haskins Center.

I think we are headed toward a neutral site tournament which will be much better than on campus tournament sites.

It should be hosted by the champion of the regular season like it used to be. I know the argument about it being a last minute travel and hotel reservation problem, but if we were able to do it before, why not now?

Minerforlife and ST are both correct.we don't have the proper facilities and we sucked with the attendance when it was here a few years ago. UAB deserves it with their nice little upset against Iowa State in the NCAA Tourney.

Stupid Carlos and Epileptic we had best attendance in the conference.
Have you compared the UTEP facilities with the rest of the conference, open your eyes.

El Paso and Miner fans have no one to blame but themselves. Last CUSA final held here was a ghost town. EP is way far from all the Eastern teams too.
Not going to be sarcastic, just gonna state that last years tournament in UAB was way less attended than when it was here, that's all.

I really think you might have huffed too much paint growing up.

Just because UTEP has the highest attendance doesn't mean the conference wants to send the other 13 teams to El Paso. El Paso does not have the best facilities. The BJCC has held regular NCAA tournaments and is bigger and nicer than the DHC.

The women play at UABs arena. They play at dumpy Memorial gym here. Which one do you think is better for the conference?

I liked having the tournament in El Paso and hope you guys get to host again in the future. Having the tournament in Birmingham on a regular basis has been planned since before Watts and the football debacle. Most schools were pleased with last year's location and attendance.

The Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Center committee has been very aggressive trying to make UAB the permanent destination for the CUSA tourney. Other than country music concerts, the convention area has some trouble attracting large events (based on articles from their local fishwrap)and the CUSA tournament is their cherry on top. I really don't want to go down this "Memphis" style of tournament planning, similar to when they were in CUSA. That was like BYU of the WAC days.

UTEP needs to get the heck out of CUSA. Hopefully with the new additional research facilities (just waiting for Governor "Open Carry" to sign), the legislature will finally give UTEP the Tier 1 status to get the heck out of CUSA. But that will be another three to five years down the road...ugh!

Our athletic dept. and administration doesn't seem to care to put in any upgrades to a place where the volleyball team plays. During the WBB conference tournament, only the first round and quarterfinals are played in the secondary arena. The semifinals and final are played in the primary arena.

Im not trying to bash our facilities. Overall our facilities are the best in CUSA. However, anyone who has been in memorial gym knows conference games especially tournament games shouldnt be played there.
We are one of the few conferences left who doesnt have a neutral site for conference tournaments. Its time for a neutral site. I saw that Biloxi ms put in a bid. I would support Biloxi as the permanent site. Its a tourist destination, beaches casinos etc, and its centrally located.

If UAB was not in the finals of their own tournament, their attendance would have been much lower. If UTEP was in the final here in El Paso, it would have sold out and the attendance would have been much higher. You have to take the average of the whole tournament and use that as the number. It is truly deceiving to use the finals only, especially since UAB was in them, and it was still a crappy crowd.

Las Vegas hosts the most tournaments, 5 at this time and can accommodate more with the new 20,000 seat arena going up. I am sure that all the east teams would be against it, as the WAC, West Coast Athletic, MWC, PAC 12 and one other that slips my mind are all west based conferences.

If, if, if, that's all you have. Look at this youtube video, the attendance for the 2014 final wasn't even close to the announced attendance of 4700.

UTEP is too far west for almost every fan of the eastern schools. What part of that don't you guys get? There was barely any UTEP fans at this year's tournament. If the tournament was held in Dallas, San Antonio, even New Orleans, there would be a solid UTEP crowd there. When the tournament is held here, only UTEP brings a crowd. Once the Miners get eliminated, tickets are given away and still no one goes.

Not at all. Just not sure why people would call it "bs" if EP isn't chosen. Other cities have better facilities and a more centralized location. Just because the Miners lead the league in attendance doesn't mean EP deserves to hold the CUSA tourney.

I never stated it was B.S. because El Paso wasn't chosen. I stated it was B.S. that UAB was awarded the tournament for the second year running, thereby providing UAB with back-to-back home court advantages for a solo bid to The Tournament from this sh!tty conference. Apparently, reading comprehension is not Carlos' forte.

Like I said in another thread, it looks like we are arguing for the sake of arguing. In this case, over wording. On CUSAbbs, I was one of the bigger UAB supporters. Most Miner fans were as well. Still, even under normal circumstances, UAB should not be the heir apparent to host every season like Memphis did. It makes even less sense as they were on the fringe of being booted out of the conference.

You have to compare apples to apples. Where is the video of the 2011 conference championship game held in El Paso. A full house, compared to a paltry 8200 fans when UAB was in it on their home court. They can't even get fans to come to their own games when they are in the championship. How many fans were at the championship game in Tulsa when Tulsa wasn't in it. Again, you have to take the average attendance of the tournament as a whole, and not base it on the championship game when the home team is not in it.
It is BS that UAB gets the tournament again. If it was awarded elsewhere, then that would have been fair. And I believe that is what everyone is complaining about. Not because El Paso didn't get it, but because no one should have that advantage 2 years in a row.

The full house you are talking about in 2011 had a lot to do with UTEP playing Memphis and it was Floyd's first season here. And we made the NCAA Tourney the year before too. Evertime Memphis played in the Don in the CUSA regular season, the game was a sellout. Plus, people were excited with Floyd back in 2011, his 1st season. If we hosted the CUSA BB Tourney here last season and made it to the Championship game, we would have had an attendance around what UAB had, 8200 fans.

Negatory! Not sure where that notion springs from. It may not have been a sellout although it conceivably would've been, but it would have brought a minimum of 10, 000 into the DHC.

Average games last season were getting 8K fans. There is no way the attendance in a tourney final would be less than 11K. Even the biggest detractor has to admit El Paso has a lot of bandwagon fans.
