From replays, it seemed like he would have stepped out or tackled out with less than 3 seconds. With a possible field goal shot, it could have ended similarly.

Very true, however it wouldn't have been just a chip shot. Caught the ball on about the 35, so a 50 plus yarder, depending on where he'd have been pushed out of bounds or tackled. No gimmie.
