When does UTEP earn its first football win this season?

I'll say Rice, but if UTEP is ever going to beat OU this is the season to do it. OU has a new head coach and their QB (though not missing the game) has been distracted. On top of that no one is expecting anything from UTEP against OU so maybe it being first game they can surprise them.... not saying that it'll actually HAPPEN, but if it WERE to happen this would be the year.

Exact opposite. OU is loaded this year. Many starters are returning. Their qb is not distracted. Not the sharpest tool in the shed, but not distracted. Mike Stoops is returning with his starters running their same base defense. OU is predicted to win the Big XII.

It's going to be a blood bath.

Or in the words of Colin Cowherd we have the same chance of beating OU as McGreggor has of beating Mayweather.

Who knows anything about Rice? How do we match up with them?

UTEP matches up just fine against Rice. Rice ditched their base defense and got a new D coordinator and it takes at least two years to learn a new system. There is a 3 way battle for qb but the qb that smacked UTEP last year is back. Their strength is their D line.

This is a "pick'em" game for both IMO and the battle for the bottom of the barrel beer of CUSA West for both programs.

Is this as close as UTEP and Alvin Jones will get to the CUSA championship trophy?

some of you all think we can beat Arizona hahahha
Arizona was pretty bad last year, ESPECIALLY their defense. Grambling St. gave them a run for their money (and Grambling was up 21-3 at halftime), so Arizona is a very vulnerable team. (To be fair, Grambling St. might have beaten UTEP last season.) If it is at all possible for UTEP to win a game against a P5 team, then Arizona is as good a shot as they're going to get.

Unfortunately, UTEP's terrible offensive philosophy doesn't give me confidence that Kugler will come up with a game plan to exploit Arizona's weaknesses. A Mike Price team, even one of the bad ones, would have matched up great against Arizona because his teams still put up lots of points. I would have given any of Mike Price's teams a fighting chance against Arizona.

Alas, under Kugler, UTEP will probably need a huge win in the turnover battle to pull it off. Three lucky punches, as I said earlier.

Once again our resident t-shirt duck fan brings us an insightful post. Arizona isn't good. In 2014 they went to San Antonio and it took a last second field goal to beat UTSA. The same UTSA squad we would later shut out and hold to 77 yds. That year Arizona went to the fiesta bowl. This year's cat squad is not good and Rich rod may very well be on his way out. Arizona is the third toughest home game. WKU and UTSA will be tougher.

LOL! WT...?! As they say in El Chuco, "cool arrow".

If there was time to notch a p5 win, it would be Arizona. However, U of A and the state hate El Paso and think poorly of UTEP, IMO, and to them losing to UTEP would be like the ugly loss to NAU or Norfolk State in basketball. So I'm guessing they will come to the Sun Bowl with a chip on the shoulder to avoid an "ugly loss" and rightfully so because it would be an ugly loss. UTEP has no threatening passing game, Jones is gone and Kugler still wants to play Knute Rockne football.

I don't think Arizona hates El Paso. I don't think they care about El Paso. We match up well because we are physical and they are very finesse. We don't play knife to cone ball. We play the exact same style as rocky long at sdsu, shaw at Stanford and mark Antonio at Michigan State do. Obviously it hasn't worked as well for Kugler. The power run games is his sword and he very well may fall on it this year.

Rush the field for Arizona? Boy, can you imagine the nasty comments by the southern Arizona border militia groups?!

Please do! Also please beat UTSA that has trap game written all over it.

No doubt. Nobody on UTSA 's schedule will have an easy time with the Roadrunners this year. I think they were appropriately picked to finish 2nd in the west. Don't think they are quite on La Tech's level yet, but that could be a showdown towards the end of the season between the two.

Hugh Freeze to UTEP?

If he can bring a recruiting edge as an assistant and signs a fair and clearly worded contract that he has to keep his nose clean (and cell too) then I say why not. People make mistakes and that includes married, I go to church, have children college football coaches.

However, as an arm chair UTEP alum and decades long follower of Miner football I believe in giving a strong character, juco or lower division coach a chance at the FBS level. If you're over 45 years old coaching at the FBS level and not disciplined or smart enough to stay away from escorts or trolling red light districts then you might deserve to be working at some mall food court.

LMAO! Someone also predicted 7 wins in this thread. Hahaha

Interesting revisiting this thread.

At 0-3, are the Miners desperate/hungry, or have they quit?

Anything else you would like to add??

Arizona is not very good. They would lose to half the teams in cusa. We made them look real good. WKU UTSA and maybe even nmsu will beat us worse than Arizona did. The fact we suck doesn't mean Arizona is good. Now run along and be a t-shirt fan. I'm sure I've given as much money to the university of Oregon as you have.
