And he's not even a starter. I would have assumed SMU had more money to give than Memphis. That should tell us a lot.

I dont feel sorry for some of these kids. They are being misled by adults because they want a "bag" before they even earn it.

He's 23 years old. He's not a "kid." Other than that, I agree with you. He's looking to get paid before he's done a damned thing. They all are.

And Memphis had this exact problem last year mid season. They took a guy with great stats at Louisiana. But he did not play much at Memphis and sat for 6 weeks over some kind of NIL issue.

This whole thing concerns me. My proposal is limit kids payment to scholarship, books and room and board.
And limit coaches salaries to $150k. Anybody that does not like is free to exit.

Otherwise the black hole is only going to get bigger & bigger.

In looking that up I found this small tidbit I did not know about:

"Jim Barnes told Coach (Don) Haskins he would not come to any city where he couldn't go to a movie theater."

The benefit of signing early is what if they get hurt and other offers dry up? Besides, they can always decommit later on. Are letter of intents even enforceable now?

Nearly every year I see 4-6 guys who signed or committed to lower level schools early. And then when they had a good year, they decommit or ask for a release or whatever and then sign at higher levels.

Memphis is having a problem with a new player. SMU transfer. Was supposedly promised $X monthly. 4 months later he has not gotten a time.
So he asked to step away from the team I guess to give them a final chance at coughing up the cash or he will sit out the year and go elsewhere next year. Oh, and it seems he was not happy with not starting or playing enough in an exhibition against UNC.
