Same ish... Different year. I've been reading a TON of things today on this board that are the same things that are said time and again, year after year. "It's too early, we need to give [insert coach name] time". "We can't get players to come here", etcetera, etcetera... The one thing I can say with alllll my years of big time college coaching experience is that damn 3-3-5 has to GO. Two games is all I need to see. The scheme didn't work when UTEP tried it years ago and I almost threw up when I saw they're doing it again. IT DOES NOT WORK. Unless you have Brian Urlacher running around making plays the scheme is trash and needs to go. UTEP may not have great defensive personnel, but the scheme makes it worse. I don't care what anyone says having only 3 down linemen, 3 LBs and 5 DBs - essentially nickel coverage EVERY play - has a hand in giving up 20 ypc or whatever Southern Utah had. This performance was embarrassing. Housed by THAT school after their head coach talked all greazy during the week and that's what UTEP gives? Shameful.

When I first saw the thread title, I though it would be about a prediction about UTEP's record. I was going to come in here and say there's NO way we win 3 games this year! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

I like CS's defense. He brings players from different positions and they have been disruptive. Now having a legit All CUSA 1st Team/NFL draftee like a Westmorland to coach makes life better and I see him getting double teamed....and he still beats them at times! Like I said, that's what I saw in two games.

However, the Jekyle and Hyde in both games was frustrating. SUU came out in the second half and just rammed it down UTEP's throat. I have not seen that since ECU rammed it down UTEP's throat against a Price led team yeas ago. (LT game against TCU doesn't count because Nord and the team stupidly taunted TCU the day prior during walk thru).

That second half was disgusting to watch. That undisciplined performance was disgusting. Refs make bad calls, but UTEP gave them bullets to use.

Press better not let Scotty off the hook at the presser today. Give me a badge to enter, I'll ask if they can't.

To add to this, UTEP’s defensive coordinator under Scott “Jumps Around A Lot” Walden has never been a full time position coach in the FBS.

UTEP’s special teams coordinator (**** that cringe and stupid wefense shit) has also never been a full time FBS position coach.

You get what you pay for.

Pathetic thing is we overpay for what we get. Gave him a 600k dollar raise to have an fcs team at the fbs level.

The 3 3 5 is like the dumb hedging of bigs in basketball, but without the steals. Play defense from the inside out. Who cares about long balls and 3s when you can just run the ball or make layups?

Teams now know if they lean heavily into they run they can grind the Miner defense down. Plus, if Walden wants to run a fast paced offense that’s going to put the defense in a bigger bind since they may be forced to play defense even longer. I hope Walden and his staff can show some tactical flexibility and maybe use a 4 down linemen or slow the offense down a little just to give the defense a breather. Late in the game vs So Utah the Miners were able to eat up some clock and move the ball. That seems like a good tactic, especially late in games or as a change of pace because if the defense is gassed late in games I don’t think any lead will be safe.
