BG would have had to stay more than 4 or 5 extra years though. Gonzaga is Gonzaga because Few has been there for 25 years. UCLA was UCLA because of John Wooden. They aren’t UCLA anymore because of constant coaching changes. Kansas is Kansas because they’ve had 2 coaches in 40 years.
What would this program have become had Haskins stayed in Detroit?
Nice to think about, but Billy needs to continue taking care of Billy before anything else, or he won't have too many options other than just surviving. I wish him the best.
This is a great point. While he was here and at aTm, Gillispie didn't do a great job of keeping his demons in check, but he did a good enough job to keep them from affecting his job performance. Not so at Kentucky and Texas Tech.
There were writeup's about that some time back. He mentioned that very fact and he said he happy at TSU with no thoughts to make it back to the bigs.

Billy Gillespie, like any other mid major coach, would have bolted for greener pastures at a power conference school no matter what. It just so happened to be Texas A&M, which ultimately led him to Kentucky. Same thing for Doc Sadler (it’s Nebraska, man) and Tony Barbee (Auburn). The days of His Coachency Don Haskins staying at UTEP for 38 years died with him.
Funny thing is that at the end of the day ALL of them failed at the power conference schools

Their best wins are a neutral court win vs 4-7 Miami and at 5-7 Seton Hall. Very impressive team there!!!!
Tarleton went up 10 spots in the net while Oklahoma St dropped 8 after that game.
But there’s a lesson to learn from it. If you want to manipulate the NET system, stop scheduling shitty teams at home and hit the road at Power teams.
True to some extent, but once you pass a certain amount of losses, it’s all for nothing.
I don’t have a problem with UTEP’s schedule this year, from a non-STH POV. A lot of road games. Crap home games though. Wish they would schedule 1 or 2 more Power teams instead of non-D1 teams.
True. Damned if you do, damned if you don't. At least you give yourself more of a chance if one of those miracle seasons were to occur and you've walked murderer's row.
Hard to believe a team could get through 6 true road games though, maybe 2 or 3, not 6.
