Breaking News / UTEP Tennis

Ugh. Is this why beach volleyball was added? Planned to replace tennis because it cheaper and easier to build facilities for it? (I think tennis played/practiced at the EP Tennis Center)

There are no facilities that need to be added for beach volleyball. They play in the dirt. Most of their games are on the road.

This probably came down to the fact that utep does not have any of its own tennis facilities. They lost both set of tennis courts in the campus expansion over the last 20 years. Theyve had to rent use of the El Paso Tennis and swim club facilities since then and it was probably the easiest thing to chop. Golf was probably eyed as well for the same reason.

Didn’t even know we had women’s tennis.
I read about the rifle, softball , soccer, basketball and volleyball teams. Haven’t heard anything about tennis.

Another great Jim Senter accomplishment. First program we lose in 25 years.
The men's tennis program was dismissed in the '90s under Natalicio and Hovious.

Also not having an indoor facility especially with the spring winds didn't help either.
Has anyone here ever attended a UTEP women's tennis match ?
I attended a mens' match in the '90s.

They are doing this in response to the House v NCAA settlement. Part of that settlement increases the number of scholarships a program can offer. Beach volleyball went from a max of 6 scholarships to 19. Football went from 85 10 105. The tennis team was not very competitive in recent years, which shouldn't have been the case, IMO. The big impact is that the NCAA at the division one level is reducing/eliminating the ability to have walk ons. In essence, all athletes will now be receiving scholarships. In UTEPS case it will mean fully scholarships at the maximum level in order to compete in the MWC. I still believe they didn't have to cut tennis.

Yeah it sucks that people are losing jobs and students are losing opportunities, but let’s be honest here, nobody really gave a rip about this program.

Senter is preparing for the financial shortfall resulting from next season’s basketball disaster. He’s no idiot. It’s obvious to him and anyone else who follows that awful athletic department that Golding is a piss poor coach and recruiter who will tank the program and finish at the bottom of next season’s basketball standings. Very few will buy tickets for a loser, and that is what utep basketball has become. Losing = utep=no money =no tennis.

Senter is hoping and praying UTEP doesn’t lose to Utah St and/or Mr 5* doesn’t look like trash or else it will be a sparse crowd for UT-Martin.

Two people lost their job. The assistant coach wasn't even paid. The associate head coach was making just about as much as a full time $15 an hour worker. They will be fine.

No student is losing any opportunities. They still will keep their scholarship and can play at other schools, if they choose to.
