Coach Kugler steps down

Wonder if Natkin will be the interim? It was overdue, thanks for the effort CSK, good luck.

He's only a couple seasons off target, but better late than never in keeping his word.

Although I'm sure this was more of a forced move. Resign or else...

This will not be filled until right before or during bowl season at the soonest given state law, recruiting and installments of asst's to get full force for recruiting. Stull will have his short list Im sure.

If Price gets the job as rumored this could get worse. Boosters may love him but they are seriously out of touch with El Pasoans. UTEP needs that casual millennial fan to come back to the games with their kid and livin in better half. They have money to buy $50 Chuck Taylor designers and $20 haircuts. They also need to win back some of monster show dad who has the kid(s) for the weekend. Convince him UTEP football is the best bang for his buck.

And please, no to Coach Veliz. The social sites are going into stupid mode with the "keep it local" crap again.

I don't see any scenario in which price gets the job.

Stull should not be hiring the next coach. Hopefully all he will do is choose the interim.

Would it be Spencer Leftwich as interim? He is listed as the assistant head coach...

We need NEW blood, not only a great recruiter with connections across Texas but with a proven record of success at the college level running a wide open offense. Sorry, no local high school coaches or former players even if they were a fan favorite.

I agree. Let the incoming AD pick our next coach. There are some great young coordinators out there looking for their opportunity to be a Head Coach.

Keep Stull away from the hiring process!!!
Stull should just ride off into the great sundown...as Thin Lizzy would sing.

The boosters can lobby for Briles all they want, but I just don't see natalicio approving it.

Thanks coach, you gave EP students a chance and helped raise the APR. It was not to be, time for the University to step it up. Or it will be more of the same.

Does anybody know when Stull will officially step down? Or at least when he is projected to step down?

Eric Morris, a native west Texan and the OC at T Tech would be a great hire at UTEP.

You are all thinking small! Let's think big, now that we have big money boosters support...
I think this next coach will be one of the greatest hires of all time, if we think big.
El Paso is hungry for a big name coach and some great assistance to go with it.

He stuck to his word and walked. Respect.

No. No he didn't. If he'd kept his word he'd have walked 1-2 years ago like he said he would when it was clear this program was only going deeper in the crapper. Who knows the full story, perhaps he and his guardian angel may have worked out a deal as he was going out the back door, just like they did when he came in through the front. Kugler effed this program up for years to come and then walked out on his team and his staff in the middle of the season, no respect or honor in that. At least have the stones to see it though to the bitter end, instead of offing your OC two weeks earlier and THEN pulling the rip chord.

Harsh? Perhaps, but karma is visiting Sean Kugler. And Bob Stull...

Kugler must be having some personal issues. I doubt he was fired mid-season.

Perhaps you're right. If so, why would he have offed his OC two weeks ago? But if you are correct, my strong suspicion is things didn't start going south the last couple of weeks. SOMEBODY (read his boss) knew what was going on. Leadership and courage seem to be in short supply on Glory Road these days. Sharpest knife cuts the quickest and hurts the least. Should have NEVER come to this. Ever.

As I mentioned on another thread, two years ago UTEP finished 5-7 and was a missed cheap shot fg from going bowling. This was accomplished with a third string qb and without Jones who was lost in the second season of the game. At that point in wasn't clear this program was going to the crapper.

Last year he went out and recruited a former 4 star transfer qb and Jones returned from injury. The schedule was set up to be our big breakthrough season. Obviously he made some mistakes by switching coordinators and the team regressed. After the 4-8 season he should have walked but most of the fan base felt comfortable allowing him to have the fifth year Nord never did.

It seems Kugler put himself in a damned if I do damned if I don't situation. If he stays the entire season every week we will have people bi*ching that he isn't a man of his word by walking out. If he walks out we have people calling him a quitter.

Seems to me you have just found excuses. While he did squeeze us into a bowl game in year 2, we did NOT appear to be turning the corner yet. Good season? yes. Turning the corner? absolutely not.
The 5-7 record you point to, it could have EASILY been 2-10. Yes, we won 5, but by no means was the fan base comfy with how things went that year. (and injuries are part of the game, so don't even use that) As I recall, most people didn't want us in a bowl that year because we would be blown out.
So, according to HIS word, he would walk if he didn't have this thing turned around in about 3 years. He didn't.

Just to be clear, I liked his hiring. I love his passion for UTEP/El Paso. It's a shame he couldn't get it done, but he should have walked after year 3. I hate when coaches don't keep their word.
He will be fine. He will land somewhere by February.

So moral of the story don't promise unrealistic expectations.
