Coach Kugler steps down

Based on wins, 3 years ago was one of the top 10 seasons in UTEP history. 2 years ago tied for the 17th best season in UTEP history. There were some cracks 2 years ago, but he was making adjustments and he changed both Coordinators for last season. I think it was more than fair for him to be given last season. Last season ended up being disapointing, but it was conflicted by also being arguably the best off-the -field season in school history(with the school’s first perfect APR score). Some thought he should have been after gone after last season, others like myself, thought it was okay to give him a fith season. Finally, everybody was in agreement two games into the 5th season that he was not working.

Regardless of when he should have resigned, we can’t do anything about that now. What is done is done. We are now replacing both the AD and Coach, and we will look to move forward.

I wouldn’t blame Kugler’s failures on switching coordinators. It’s not like we had Steve Sourrier calling plays, Patrick Higgins was pretty awful too. There’s a reason that guy got fired TWICE from UTEP. Everything that we bitched about under Pease (no downfield passing, predictability) was happening under Higgins.
