FIU at UTEP Thread

We wondered how Kalu would develop this year? He is shooting sixty six percent for the year. That's efficency.
I’ve been a fairly harsh critic of Kalu since his arrival to UTEP. His defense has always been solid but he’s been severely limited on the offensive end of the count. However, this year he’s developed a nice 7-8 foot baby hook, which has been pretty reliable, free throw shooting is better (aside from tonight), and he is definitely running the floor well to get those thunderous alley oops. He’s also playing with more energy, or heart, or whatever.

It was neck-and-neck for the first 30 minutes and then the Miners had a run (several steals) that finally blew it open.

FIU was leading most of the first half and it was tied at the half.
That’s a good description. Not that it matters but the Miners went on a 12-1 run and then another 8-0 run just after. They put together a solid final quarter of the game…minus some shoddy offensive possessions down the stretch.

Again, Golding went with a straight man to man defense. I'll wager that he starts switching defenses between the man-to-man and hedging before the last game of the season. Who wants to bet?
I think it depends on the matchup. Neither NMSU or FIU are great outside shooting teams, so Golding had the defense hedge under the screen. Meaning there is more opportunities for open shots outside. I'm not sure if that is the correct approach against a team like Liberty.

I have to give credit where credit is due but the evolution of Kevin Kalu has been a joy to see. Unfortunately, in today’s college basketball, I’m afraid that we won’t being seeing much of that development anymore. I wish we had him one more year because of the way he is starting to perform, next year could’ve been a breakout year for him. I hope others (Jones, Terrell, for example) will look at him for inspiration and trust the process of staying at Utep for the remainder of their careers.
