Floyd's resignation last night was a surprising plot twist that no one saw coming.
And what a tragedy the end of his career was. Most Miner fans were ecstatic when we landed him seven years ago. He was a successful college coach and got the job done at every college campus he ever worked at. Until he came here.
Many believed he would be able to rebuild a program and bring it back to the glory days of the 80s and that he wanted to be in El Paso. That this would be his last stop and he would retire here after hanging a few more NCAA banners from the UTEP rafters! He would be our hero.
Instead.. he shocked everyone and walked away from the game last night. The players cried and hugged him. And Floyd coached for the last time as he was never able to do what set out to do. This wasn't a true retirement. A retirement usually involves celebration, pats on the back and nice speeches.
This was Floyd stepping into darkness. And not the way anyone envisions ending their coaching career.
This was the end of the UTEP-Floyd era.
But there's light at the end of the tunnel. Interim Coach Phil Johnson has the opportunity to set a new tone for the rest of the season. And unless Johnson takes us dancing, we all have faith that Bob Senter will hire a great new coach who can hopefully keep and mold our young talent and rebuild. A coach who can raise the basketball sword!
