NFL great, broadcast icon John Madden dies at 85

Hall of Fame coach-turned-broadcaster John Madden, whose exuberant calls combined with simple explanations provided a weekly soundtrack to NFL games for three decades, died Tuesday morning. He was 85.

Madden and Summerall were the soundtrack to my youth when I was a kid watching the NFL. I always felt like they worked every Cowboys game in the early 90s.

When I was a sophomore at Eastwood, our band played for a Charger/Raider halftime in 1975. Madden came out to listen to us practice before the game and even yucked it up with us. He was one of a kind and a real nice guy.
