Lamar Norman Jr.

Anyone else notice that there's Butler paraphernalia everywhere on that table (water koozie, media guide, other handouts), and the only UTEP item is the hat that Norman Jr. is wearing.

Just another example of how Stull and this inept athletic dept have failed.

I mean-- do we even HAVE a koozi guy...?.... cause we better have an effing koozi guy, otherwise Bob and ol' Dr. Nat have some 'splainin' to do...

I mean it looks silly, but these signing ceremonies are basically PR events. UTEP has a chance to make a positive impression on those communities when they sign a kid and they need to do all they can to make the University look good.

That's how recruitment pipelines get started. Which by the way, we haven't had since the Memphis Connection under Barbee.

Actually, the teams can't give a player anything or it's a violation of NCAA rules. We had kids at my school sign. We had one kid sign and for $5 he received 3 hats and 3 shirts.

This is a big pickup for the miners. Norman is under the radar right now but a very athletic scorer and could play big minutes right away with the loss of Omega.

I think its completion of minimum core classes in high school with a grade average of 2.0, then a minimal score on the ACT/SAT? Not sure about the exact numbers.

A 2.0? LOL!! If you don't have a 2.0 in high school you shouldn't be in college.

At least as of 5 years ago, the lower the HS GPA, the higher the SAT or ACT score had to be to be an NCAA qualifier. With, as axingfools said, 2.0 being the minimum GPA allowable. I remember there was movement towards raising the minimum GPA to 2.5, I believe.

Not sure if that's still the case or not.

First, let's make something perfectly clear before someone gets the wrong idea: there has been nothing to indicate that Norman is in any danger of not qualifying academically.

With that out of the way, there is a little more to it than achieving the required GPA and test score. Like axingfools1 said, there is a set of core courses that the players have to take and pass. A few years ago Andre Speight enrolled in the summer semester to get an early start on college and playing with the team. As far as he and UTEP were concerned he had the right GPA and test score. The NCAA, however, determined that a class he took (I think it was math, but I'm not sure) didn't qualify as a core course, making him one course short. He then became an academic non-qualifier, and decided to play JC ball instead.
