The Sun Bowl is on the Utep Campus. I hate when you guys say Utep has nothing to do with the Sun Bowl. Utep should kick the Sun Bowl out then have them play Soccoro Field or El Paso High. Utep can start its own own bowl game. The stadium is what makes the Sun Bowl, the Stadium that is own by Utep. Does the Sun Bowl organization pay Utep to have its game there?? What does the contract say?
The cotton bowl isn't played at the cotton bowl.

I always thought you were trolling.....realizing that is not the case.

Anyways, one of the more vocal UNLV fans on twitter seem to have soured on MWC. I expect them and AFA be gone first chance they get. (NMSU in when that happens?)

Is that really how it works these days? One upset fan, and suddenly all the legal agreements go out the window, and the millions of dollars at stake just vanish?

Fili, I believe the Sun Bowl Association rents out the stadium for the game.
The teams do not practice at UTEP.
Why would the Association play in a smaller stadium when they can still draw over 40,000? I also remember the rent was like a dollar. That was part of the agreement when the county transferred ( or sold) the stadium to UTEP.

How would you be feeling if we were all UNLV fans at this point? All the “good” teams left and basically “we” decided not to follow them.

The MWC replaced San Diego, Boise, Fresno, Colorado St, and Utah St with Hawaii, UTEP, GCU, UCDavis, and NIU. 1 group is clearly better than the other. Not to mention the other group added Gonzaga.

Instead of playing Gonzaga and San Diego St in basketball, they’re playing UC Davis and Hawaii in 2 seasons.

The way that we felt when CUSA was down to 5 teams and added all the schools there now, is how they all feel

Who owns the Sun Bowl name?? Is the stadium named the Sun Bowl?

They should play in a smaller stadium because they don't do anything to help Utep. When Utep was the one who started playing in the game .it was El Paso who supports the game and made it what it is today. Utep has the most Sun Bowl wins in the history. The Rose Bowl let's USC play in its game.

Who cares what UNLV thinks. How you think Oregon State and Wazzu feel?? How you think Texas A&M feels?? Everyone is upset.

Oregon State and Washington State definitely got the short end of the stick. What could A&M possibly have to complain about?

Once again I have to ask...

Do you really believe the junk you post or are you intentionally trolling by making the dumbest remarks possible?

Dear UNLV fans, you had two good seasons in football, congrats. Your basketball is nowhere the perennial top program it once was. Now settle down.

The only junk I'm hearing is people saying Utep has nothing to do with the Sun Bowl. Those are the trolls. That's like saying the Cinderella Castle has nothing to do with Walt Disney World.

No not at all, but i thought it was interesting because that particular fan was all gun ho initially. (I think he even posted around here)

Yeah of course I get it. My bewilderment had more to do with seeing UNLV fans ok with staying in the MWC initially, even after Reno moved on to P12.

Due to UNLV’s location, they can be bad at sports. I don’t think the majority of them feel entitled. From what I have read, UNLV chose to remain in the MWC, due to economic reasons. The Pac 12 would definitely take them at this point, assuming it were possible.

What if UTEP had told the MWC, “we can’t afford it, no thanks”? We would be upset about it too. There’s not 1 smart UTEP fan that wouldn’t want to be in the Pac 12. It’s clearly better than the MWC.

I'm pretty sure that we know exactly the way they're feeling as it has happened to us about 3 or 4 times already. It sucks for them but they're loss is our gain.

One thing that I find amusing on X is that Washington State and Oregon State fans are constantly crapping in the new MWC now. They're the UTEP of G5. They were left behind and now think they're the coolest G5s on the country. It must suck for them to go from eating steak to eating bologna.

I think the difference is UNLV said no, or allegedly “couldn’t afford to”. We here, were never invited anywhere when the others left.

Yeah, the OSU and WSU are a funny bunch. They both sucked against new MWC teams in football this year and I think I saw OSU lost to Loyola Marymount in WCC play by 20 the other day.

The Sun Bowl needs to look into the future and see how they can position itself to host the opening round of the College Football Playoff.

Eventually, it will be ultra monetized like March Madness. There will be bidding for host sites, brackets will have regions for Travel purposes of fan bases, seeding and selection will get figured out, it will expand teams, the dates will be moved, etc…

The 12 team playoff is the tip of the iceberg.

Unless the playoffs are expanded beyond 12 teams, there’s no way in hell El Paso hosts a first round game, and not until the Sun Bowl undergoes a major renovation or rebuild.

The Haskins Center once hosted NCAA Tournament games. Now it’s completely obsolete for that purpose.

Once the NCAA expands the playoff, which they will, it will eventually go to 14, then 16, 24 and 32. There is just too much money to be made.

I agree with you on 100%, which is why they need to start planning their survival strategy now.

The only way the Sun Bowl would host is if UTEP was in it. The first round is held at the higher seeded host. There would be no change if they expanded, there would just be more teams that would be able to play at home for the 1st round.

If they do expand it will just be with more on campus games. They really can’t expect fans to keep traveling to multiple sites with short turnaround times.

There are several bowls ahead of the Sun in stature. Having a supped up Sun Bowl is highly unlikely to draw a hypothetical game. Even then, you think it’s a wise move to throw money at it to get 1 game? Which would just be replacing the bowl game.

The Sun Bowl is successful because it’s on NYE or so every year. A playoff game would be a few weeks before that. Would it affect attendance? I don’t know.

I’m all for being proactive, I just think it’s ridiculous to think El Paso would jump bowls in San Antonio, Orlando, or LA.

Wait, what? Chose to remain for economic reasons? True.

But "take them as this point"? No.

I said “assuming it were possible”. I can’t even read whatever you sourced because it’s paywalled. The Pac 12 would certainly take UNLV at this point. They misplayed their hand and still don’t have 8 football members.

Senter is probably planning as you speak. Always ahead of the curve

Yep there is too much money to be made. That is why there will never be college playoff games being played in the Sun Bowl. Do you think the college football mafia is going to make more money with Clemson vs. Texas in a 47k Sun Bowl stadium than DK Royal Stadium that seats over 100k and has more than 100 luxury suites? It would be cool to have playoff games here but it just ain’t going to happen.

It won’t happen in El Paso only because we aren’t ready for it now and won’t do anything to get ready.

But in our lifetimes, we will see a 32 team playoff with all neutral sites. The NCAA will bid out all of the host sites.

Cities building Indoor Stadiums want games. Nashville, Chicago, Indianapolis, Minneapolis, Detroit, Las Vegas, Jacksonville, So-Fi will all want games.

All the fair weather cities and dome stadiums have a chance. Sun Bowl has 2 things going for it, the age of the Sun Bowl and it’s in a fair weather city.

The current playoff is already broken. You finish top 4 and don’t get a home game? The seeding makes little sense. You have games being played in poor weather.

It’s all going to change and quickly

One major issue is the fact that UTEP can’t get enough money together to seriously renovate either of their tentpole facilities. And the voters don’t want to raise taxes to help renovate facilites that are not property of the city. So this is all a moot point.

I agree it’s going to be changing quickly. There is more money to be made in a large college football playoff format than all these meaningless bowl games now days that teams and starting players don’t even want to play in. Teams and players want to play for a national championship.

These playoff games will draw more than 47k fans and that is why, like you mentioned, these large cities like Nashville, LA, Minneapolis, Vegas etc. want these games and their stadiums hold more than 47k fans and they have luxury suites for the high roller fans. These sites will generate more revenue than a game at the Sun Bowl will.

Weather isn’t really an issue. The Penn State and Ohio State games were freezing and didn’t stop it from selling out. And I am curious why you think the age of the Sun Bowl is a something going on favor of hosting a college football playoff game?

Trying to be proactive and investing hundreds of millions of dollars into making the Sun Bowl a desirable college football destination will turn into a disaster IMO. We already altered the Sun Bowl to accommodate “ big time” soccer matches and look how that turned out.
