In all seriousness, with all the departures, I don't think the MWC is better than the MAC in football. They are a step up in basketball, but NIU isn't joining in basketball. Maybe there really is something to that comment about the students being able to study on the plane, because it doesn't make much sense to me otherwise.
I think having NIU on the MWC side, kinda tilts it in favor of the MWC. It definitely won’t have the gap they currently do.

I listened to the NIU press conference and they kept mentioning the House settlement and NIL as reasons why they joined the MWC. I would guess they believe the MWC will be financially better off than staying in the MAC.

From a fan perspective it kind of stinks. There’s no drivable conference games anymore, but I don’t believe there were that many fans making those trips to begin with. When they play at Hawaii, game will start about 11pm local time and end after 2am.

Conference realignment makes little to no sense when you look at where schools are going. It sounds like money is the deciding factor.

At the end of the day… Utep is better off than where we were. So now our concern can be about being competitive in the new MWC. No one can argue though it was the right time to get out of CUSA and having UNM, Wyoming, UNLV, Nevada, Air Force, Hawaii, etc… is more appealing than what we’ve had prior. On the Basketball side we now at least have a shot at being in a multibid league.

UTEP gets more fans to their games than 90% of G6 and mid majors. UTEP hasn’t had a “good” team in 10 years.
It’s one of the reasons we got the MW bid, even with bad to mediocre teams we still do well enough in attendance.

I will actually agree with picks up here, if basketball was averaging 9.5k and football 35k, it would help our athletic budget tremendously and bring us closer to being competitive in the MW. That many fans in the stands means more merch, concession, and ticket revenue and gives Senter an easier path to move on from coaches earlier. Also gives him a chance to offer more competitive salaries.

Winning really would solve a lot of our issues.

When was the last time UTEP averaged 9.5 in basketball? They didn’t even average 9 in the 2009-10 season.

Outside of 2000, 2004, 2005, how many times have they averaged 35k?

Maybe if all of El Paso set up a tithe for UTEP, we could have toilets made up of gold at the Sun Bowl and DHC!

Not only that, I can’t think of any G5 schools currently averaging 35k, maybe ECU? And as for 9.5k, that’s practically unheard of. Those are some incredibly high standards, in the current landscape of G5 programs.

It’s just unrealistic; especially with the way the teams have performed over the last 10 years. 5k and 20k are the new bars here.

6-7K avg for Basketball if winning once we start MWC and 25-30K avg for Football is a reasonable expectation. That would put us pretty high up there on the G6 and Mid Major ranks.

One of the reasons we keep coaches to the end of their contracts through disappointing seasons is the lack of money. We can’t upgrade the DHC or Sun Bowl without money. We can’t hire more competitive or better coaches without money.

The Sun Bowl capacity dwarfs most of G5 schools and is third in the new MW behind AF and UNLV. 35k/9.5k sounding unrealistic because of the past decade of results doesn’t mean that it shouldn’t be a goal for the programs going forward.

Look at coaching salaries as well. When compared to their future MWC schools, only NIU and Hawaii pay their HC less than UTEP. Money rules everything and the cycle of mediocrity will continue if we want champagne but we can pay for malt liquor.

Even if we paid Walden 1 million that moves him from 105th to 90th in the country in terms of salary.

They didn’t even get 9k when they went to the NCAAs in 2010.

When was the last time, if ever, did they average 9.5k in basketball?

And the NIU coach beat Notre Dame and won a bowl game this year.

Better teams, more fans
So the next time UTEP has a bad season in which probably isn't far away (I hope I'm wrong) and you start complaining, I'll start telling you about teams that had a worse season than UTEP so you can feel better too.

We always hold UTEP accountable for bad teams. We can hold fans accountable too. By the way we're going to sell it out for Saturday! Kudos to UTEP for winning and the fans for filling up the Don!

If it makes you happy. Those teams that have worse seasons won’t have near the attendance that UTEP will though.
