Back then, UTEP was having a ton more success than they are having now.
The current version of CUSA now, is a shell of its former self, and is only getting worse. You can't argue that right now, it is a vast improvement over CUSA, in money and teams. Regardless of how the future pans out, it is still a no brainer move for a university that has been terrible over the last few years.
My question: Would you have been happier if NMSU got taken into the MW, and UTEP was left in CUSA?
CUSA continues to decline, and it is never going to be better than a water downed MW regardless of the changes. You have to take it for what it is, an upgrade and a life line to a school that really has done nothing to deserve it.
I just don't see how you can't see the writing on the wall for CUSA and that even with the MW changing in the future, it will always be better than CUSA. Secondly, you are banking that UTEP actually is vastly more successful in the next 5 years. Where would you get the idea that will happen when they are fine giving a 3 year extension to a coach that has finished at near bottom of the conference the last 3 years.
My guess is that UTEP finishes towards the bottom of the MW, but at least is in a better conference with more revenue, because if things stay the same, you would be sadly disappointed where UTEP may be if they continued to stay in CUSA. They may be in a position where they cannot recover from.
