The following is a summary of Coach Johnson's comments from the coach's show last night. I really enjoy listening to him as he really knows his stuff and doesn't spin. Again, these are his comments and not mine.
*the new guys put in the time this summer
*haven’t had a bad practice
*he’d rather be deep in the backcourt than in the front court, thinks their backcourt lineup can be the best in conf. and will allow them to compete for victory in all games
*the rules re hand checking mean more driving to the hoop – this team has the 1s and 2s to do this
*reduced shot clock means more pressing – this team has the guards to burn the press
*Artis has a high bball iq and is a hard worker…he’s done everything they’ve asked
*Moore is an elite rebounder, scorer and hard worker
*McSwiggan has some minor class transfers issues that need to get cleared up…he is a “tremendous” shooter…my side note: Johnson is very high on McSwiggan and said he may be “special”
*Winn still needs some work but his time will come
*Tevin is their most versatile player
*This team will score, the coaches know that, defense is going to be where the coaches put in the most work
*They will not hesitate to play with 4 guards – they did so at USC and went to the Sweet 16…Omega, Moore, Artis, and Morris on the floor at the same time could be “special” and give you an elite line-up from the perspective of speed, scoring and quickness…they also won’t hesitate to play with Hooper and Willms at the same time
*The suspended players will be back after the next two games and Omega will be back in mid-Dec.
*Willms will play and practice in “bits and pieces”
*The staff is “very high” on 6’11 Kelvin Jones who will be ready to play for the 2016-17 season
*The freshman bigs are all very athletic…they’d like to redshirt some of the new guys but they don’t know if they will be able to because the team is thin up front
*Flaggert is a big time shooter…very coachable…still recovering…and is a great game planner
*The staff is “hopeful” with Winn…he is physical and has been pretty good in practice…he is a rebounder
*The staff has only so many minutes for playing time and they are still figuring out who is going to help them win
*The schedule allows the team to grow…and with all the new players they need that type of schedule to grow into the college game
*CUSA is going to be very good at the top 4 or 5 teams
*They are signing two guards – a small guard and a bigger guard
Overall, he sounded very optimistic and was hinting that McSwiggin is going to be really good.
