OT: Another UTEP Failure

Wow! Very interesting article.

I would bet this same thing is happening with the athletic department.

You know when somebody tells you to stop asking questions, there is something fishy going on.

Doesn't look good for Wilson at all. I feel bad for Olives because he did the right thing and asked questions and Wilson told him to move on.

Olivas would have been a huge asset to UTEP. UTEP was the only University to have the Shuttle Columbia artifacts.

Shame on Wilson and shame on all of the other UTEP employees who let this happen.

Bob Moore's tweets are interesting to read. First UTEP wanted to restrict Olivas from receiving the records. Bob Moore had no problem seeing that information.

The funny thing is that UTEP kept stalling and didn't release anything until Wilson's first day on the job. Natalie knew what was going on and chose not to do anything about it.

UTEP: It was mismanaged. That's my impression.

Mismanagement is not a crime, not even in civil court. Nothing would get done in the country if it was, private or public. It's termination applicable, but not a crime. That is what I am reading in the tea leaves.

However, if he feels that strongly about it and now the "cat is out of the bag" he better follow through because now he has put his good name on the line. He should've kept this on the down low.

I don’t know if it’s because I’ve been watching the new season of Narcos but I often wonder if our athletic failures are a result of corruption.

"Cone noted that UTEP was billing Jacobs for part of his salary. “If I am not going to be appointed to that contract as Jacobs intended, what justification does UTEP have to invoice them for the funds? Where would the funds be going otherwise if not toward my appointment?"

Straight up fraud followed by lack of accountability. President Wilson just swept it under the carpet.

For the first time in my life, I am officially ashamed to be a Miner. Which says a lot considering how long we have sucked in sports. No wonder UTEP is in the shape it's in.

If there is intent, it's a crime. If UTEP had nothing to hide they wouldn't have told Olives to stop asking questions.

No.

Have you seen ETSU's record? Getting top 25 votes. Forbes was #1 for HC at UTEP until ETSU boosters broke out the check book to counter; it worked.

So you think there is no corruption at UTEP? You think over $300k was just mishandled without intent?

Good God almighty, UTEP is a bunch of bumbling sh*t heads from the top down.

It seems like UTEP has an office dedicated to handling the accounts and grants and they went years before they realized they were under billing Jacobs yet they want to blame everyone else but their own internal people? Especially when they’re redacting emails to shift blame.

It seems like this “It’s everyone else’s fault but mine” mentality seems to be rampant all over the university and not just an athletics thing.

This is such a bad look for UTEP, and they really should be ashamed they’re trashing a promising research program because they’re bumbling it all up. But at the same time I’m not surprised. It’s UTEP.

If that money was coming from Jacobs through NASA funding I wonder if that means the government could get involved because it’s government money.

And what does President Trump's success concerning illegal immigration have to do with the issue at hand? Nothing.....liberal media at it again.....

Wait, wut? I didn't even read whatever you're referring to but you said something about criminal, Putin owned, nazi racist pig Tяump having "success" regarding immigration?

Seriously?

Bob Moore is a douchebag. He ran the Times into the ground, and now he just stirs shit up to try to stay relevant.

I will never be ashamed. I expect better but never ashamed. P5 schools fans and alums stick by their school come heck or high water, so shall I.

But it does suck.

Good for you.

Shame and shunning are two different things. If you had a child who committed a heinous crime you probably would feel shame. You would still love your child, and in most cases be there for them, but you would be ashamed of them.

If it was just an accounting error and UTEP said "Hey, we screwed up, we'll make it right" that's one thing. But to have an accounting error and try to have the contractor pay for it, then committing fraud by intentionally billing the grant for Cone's salary (which I imagine is substantial) and not paying him from the grant but from tax money is a whole other ball game. Olivas alerted UTEP, then filed a whistle-blower report, and then even told UTEP President Wilson about the issue and was told to "just let it go". That is shameful. It's a shame that our leadership didn't represent UTEP with even a shred of integrity, and it's a shame that they treated someone who really cared about UTEP, UTEP students, and doing things right (a highly regarded UTEP alumn at that) with such disdain.

You say you P5 school fans stick by their school come hell and high water. How do you feel when your beloved institution will never enjoy the success of a P5 school because of leadership's lack of integrity and lack of accountability.

Wilson's watch, Wilson's fired.
An Academy grad with no sense of honor.
Shameful.
Everyone else in the chain complicit in this scheme should be walking the plank as well. The house needs a complete disinfection. Olivas should be designated President of the University.

I agree 100% heads should roll because they had so many departments and heads who were in charge of accounting and compliance and everyone from top down crapped the bed. And it seems like they were willing to burn bridges, alienate staff/high level contacts and falsify claims to contractors to recover money on account of their screw up. That is shameful.

UTEP seems to have this buddy system where they protect each other. We have seen this for years at the athletic department where Stull hired his boys and refused to fire them due to their gross incompetence. This shows that same mentality is present on the academic side.
