Our new DC wants aggressive defense

Per EP Times article, Mason says:

"We're going to be an aggressive 3-4, fire-zone blitz them," Mason said. "When I was with June Jones we fire blitzed on 70 percent of the snaps. That was 60 to 65 percent last year. I can't stand 'bend but don't break' defenses. I'd rather take shots at a turnover than let them go on eight minute drives.

"This is a fun defense for the kids, they love it, fans love to watch it. With Sean, it really fits his mentality: hard-nosed, aggressive football. You've got to create turnovers in today's football. I want to turn the ball over and give you four or five extra shots to get the ball offensively. I've had good success with that."

I'm imagining runs up the gut and screen passes going right past or over our blitzes for huge gains.

With a June Jones offense, they had the ability to march down the field and score a TD in 3 plays if the defense gave up a big play for a TD being aggressive. In Kuglers power run game offense, if the defense gives up 2 or 3 big play TD's being aggressive, we probably can't recover from it on offense. But hopefully it is successful and creates the turnovers like Mason said it will.

Bla Bla, Bla, I'll believe it when I see it. Still not enamored with the hire, but I really hope he makes me eat my words. Also we got killed on the pass the first half of the season. You have to have really good safeties and corners to blitz that much!

Yeah, has he seen our DB's? Didn't Andre Patterson have a similar philosophy and we were giving up around 400 yards a game?

Every DC wants an aggressive defense. That's the buzz word(s) for today. Interesting to see how aggressive he plans for them to be because if they can't tackle that's going to be a problem.
