So how well is UTEP going to pay the next head football coach? Per president Dr. Diana Natalicio: "We have pretty creative ways of approaching things. We do more with less than any university I know of."

Translation, we do not think spending resources on athletics is whats best for the state of our university. They admitted already that they cannot and will not pay a coach the 900k that most in the conference make. What creative ways does she think we have? Free mexican food for the family and a couple of cars from the dealership?

If we came up with 900k your talking the difference in being able to hire an assistant from a Power V school. We get what we pay for. Why not go all in, with a talented, good salaried coach, and see if its possible to win here? Quite frankly I am no longer sold that it is anymore.

Yes, it's obvious that Dr. Natalicio doesn't intend to fork over gobs of money. Senter seems to have a strong personality, which will be needed at UTEP.

Let's remember how Floyds contract was constructed to make him the best paid mbb coach in C-USA back in 2010. UTEP's base pay is $250k. Add in the boosters paying $200k for his radio shows, speaking engagements and camps. The university allowed him $150k from season ticket sales. $600k total but only $250k directly from the university.

Senter said in his appearance with Kappy on espn600 that no coach wants to be the lowest paid in the league. So if Senter can talk Natalicio into even a token increase, say $300k, the boosters also give a small increase on their part to $300k and the university allows him to keep $200k from season ticket sales, then Senter has a solid $800k to offer his coach. Add incentives that most coaching contracts have for winning seasons, bowl appearances, conference championships and it's within reason that a successful UTEP football coach could make in the neighborhood of $1 million dollars with a minimum of $800k. I think Senter can make something along these lines work.

If the new UTEP coach is successful and the avg attendance goes back up to 40k plus, the university will be making good money as well as compensating the coaching staff well.

Also, a new UTEP mbb coach will not need to start out at $600k so that frees up some money also.

The consequences of Natalicio's definition of doing "more" with less: perennial losing UTEP football team, women's softball team, women's volleyball and arguably the worst and uncompetitive division one athletic program in America. You get what you pay for. She knows this but doesn't care. Any significant change won't occur until she retires.

Also, why would she come out and say, "we're prepared to pay 900k for our next coach"? Then everyone will come asking for that. Not every candidate is worth that 900k to start. Its negotiations.

You summarized my thoughts perfectly. We can afford to pay a coach in the 800k - 1m range. This is one of the ways to get there. Of course only if the coach is worth that much. For an upcoming coordinator with zero HC experience I think 600-700k is reasonable. One thing is certain we need to stop offering one of the lowest salaries in the entire FBS.

She does not. But she SHOULD publicly state that UTEP will pay competitive salaries for its entire football staff, beginning with the head coach, if for no other reason than to begin the process of rebuilding seriously deteriorated relationships with the UTEP and El Paso communities. And creative incentives play a role, to be sure, but attaching anything near serious compensation to numbers (wins, conference championships, bowl appearances, attendance) is just stupid crazy, this program is likely years away from being competitive, much less meet those criteria.

I'll repeat, it's pay for play time for UTEP football. Take it serious or take it somewhere else.

Your last statement is not lost on UTEP. I can personally remember it being of discussion all the way back to the 80's. You drop FBS program, it is extremely rare to bring it back. UAB doesn't count IMO because that was entirely politically motivated from a 'bama booster hell bent on shutting down UAB football because he was rich, nucking futs and had political connections that ran within UAB as well.

If she thinks we do more with less than any university she knows means makes it pretty obvious she pays no attention to our sports teams. She probably thinks we have done more with less because we won the championship in 1966.

I think Natalicio is so caught up in this “Woe is me, El Pasoans are poor, were a commuter school, We do more with less” mentality. She made a career or doing more with less and she’s been lauded for it for years. No way can she get it through her head that we want something bigger than doing more with less, and because that’s not her way to operate she wouldn’t know how to do it. She is what she is, and when she goes we need a University President who wants to do more than brag about “doing more with less.”

This president has made a name for herself by doing " more for less" am I right? Dont get me wrong shes got a ton of prestigous academic achievements as president as far as i know lol, but lets be real here. She gets applauded and respected because she paints the " I do more with less" picture in minds all over the world. She makes no comment about devoting what she obviously feels are limited resources into athletics.

The state of the football program i dont even want to say whats on my mind if this continues for another 4 or 5 years. Use UAB as an example what could happen. A problem i pray never does take place, but the Sun Bowl would be a sad place to even walk into god forbid the only games being played there were New Years Week and rented out to high schools.

Doesnt this woman have any grandkids to go hang out with? (Kidding) but seriously....

The football program isn't going anywhere. Games are signed through 2022 at least and losing football would mean dumping volleyball, soccer and softball. You do that and the university wouldn't have enough programs to compete D1 in anything.

What is the source of this quote, by the way?

You supposedly work for a news station. I'm surprised you didn't read the article.

Ya i dont think the program would get cut either bud, but i was gauging opinion is all. Is it entirely impossible that without support the program would have to reevaluate in years to come? UAB had to reevaluate and they are blessed to have gotten their team back. I just think its best we fight now, rather then fight later when its worse. Lets go all in. If we have to put ads all over the sideline field and seats so be it haha

Is she blind, If we get a good coach who can turn things around, this place is a gold mine if
we start winning. If we can average at least 40k a game in football and 10k in basketball the
earnings would be huge. Can someone get her some binoculars.

This situation is a no-brainer.

Lets just hope some big time donors step up to the plate.

Go Miners...
