If you break it down and compare it to the other schools, it's not as bad as the headline. You can't really compare us to the P5 schools like A&M, Texas, and Texas Tech. They have ridiculous revenue.
But the G5 schools are similar to us or did worse. No G5 school profited in football. Overall, our athletic department operated at a smaller loss than everyone but UTSA.
One noticeable difference between UTEP and the other G5 schools is that UTEP receives much smaller revenue from student fees. Even a slight increase in student fees would put us in the best shape of all G5 schools.

Another interesting fact was our basketball recruiting budget triples that of UTSA and is also greater than UT's and the highest of the G5 schools. Probably because we are 36 hours from an airport

While it would help the finances a great deal if football and basketball would both start winning and selling tickets and bringing in more donations, this sensational type of headline pops up every year and is misleading. Here is an article written in 2016 by Stull on UTEP's athletic budget.
