Scotty Walden new UTEP FB Coach

Respectfully UTEP and Coach Scotty, previous UTEP football coaches have had similar clinics, football 101, whatever you want to call it.

Sorry, if this is a repeat.

"...In Cleburne, Scotty Walden found that role model. His name was Phil Young, and he was the high school football coach.

"Just the most down-to-earth, family, Christian man. Off the field, would treat everyone he saw with respect and never acted like he was above anybody," Walden says. "Just the type of man I wanted to be. But then when you got on that football field, he was a fierce competitor. That's when I definitely figured out I wanted to be a coach.""

The Scotty Walden Story

Yeah, definitely a repeat. One of the first things he talked about at his introductory news conference.

Who else is jumping on the zoom call with Scotty tomorrow? I’m excited to hear him. Maybe he’ll renew the “new season optimism” I lost years ago.

I’m more excited about the tailgate party on 8/21 at the Sun Bowl for only $35 per adult!

Heard this Yates guy from DC football on ESPN600 and he believes UTEP's 3-3-5 will cause problems for opponents because they can disguise Maurice Westmoreland.

Difference is Kugler didn't coach them. He was hands off and let his coordinators do the work, like a CEO does with his managers. I remember they mentioned on the telecast of the first game he coached.

Now I have no inside knowledge of this. But just from the few interactions I've seen with Coach Walden and his players in video along with the fact he has so many players that followed him from Austin Peay, he seems to have more of a relationship with the players. I normally am very pessimistic when coming to UTEP athletics. 49 years of being a fan and getting kicked in the sack every year does that to you. But watching how his players relate to him, knowing he had so many guys follow him half way across the nation, and knowing he had success as a head coach at his previous school leads me to think the man can Coach.

This is the type of coach — he won’t be here very long … as soon as some 7-8 win season comes he’s gone in opinion
Sucks to lose a coach that leads the team to a certain level of success, however success being the operative word here. It’s difficult to trust Senter to choose the right guy but hopefully Walden will leave here with the UTEP fb head coaching job looking like a shiny new object that attracts some high quality applicants.

But man…I’m gettin’ way ahead of myself.

Que cute! 🤡

Isn’t this what Sean Kugler did? Didn’t translate to wins then. Is the local talent suddenly up to par with the rest of the country, or is just to put asses on the seats? 🤔
First off not all those 20 are on scholarship. Second of all the ones that did receive scholarships were top talent out of the Sun City that also had FBS offers elsewhere as well. There's a difference between Walden wanting to keep the best talent local and just getting low talent players that aren't also being recruited elsewhere. El Paso will be we be a hot football recruiting ground and that's not what he's saying at all. Simply to keep the top talent here!

Kugler wanted one player from every school, don’t think he cared about their talent level. Just the best player on every team. That’s not what Walton is doing.

El Paso produces a few top-level players every year but not enough to build a team on. If coaches want to keep local talent local that's fine, whether it's Kugler or Walden. Kugler's problem was he focused too narrowly on locale. I still remember his inability to even recruit a field goal kicker. The Miners had a walk on kicker his last year here. Walden seems to be casting a wider net for the best players he can get. Go Miners.

I was listening to Kappy interview of Senter earlier this week and Senter boilerplates were:

A) Walden reenergizing the fans/EP. B) Locker room and future upgrades. (Whole project is $5 mil. 2 mil was locker room I believe). C) Future P4 opponents: Michigan, Texas, Oklahoma, Nebraska again. Michigan game alone is 1.9 million payout.

Kap and Senter are hoping for Mike Price attendance and excitement when he arrived. Senter said UTEP needs wins, now, not close games.

Underlying message. To move away from Kugler and Dimel offense with more coach involvement with the public.

In his Media Day interview he said his recruiting philosophy is to go after High School athletes from great programs as the foundation of the team. Then fill holes with well vetted players from the portal.

At Austin Peay he brought in 26 High School Players and 20 from the Portal.
Looks like he is doing what he said.
