So it’s time to accept it, Golding isn’t leaving!

He's staying, interesting tidbit. Shocked it wasn't under a paywall....at least not yet
"Golding will need money to rebuild. He will have more resources to do that. UTEP's NIL money, essentially a salary cap, per sources is going to $600,000 from $400,000, which will put it on a par with everyone in Conference USA except the forever-exception Liberty (Liberty reportedly has more than $1 million to pay its players)."

It is a glaring that Senter did not want to comment on the contact.

Well at least he didn’t get the contract extension it appears. So unless he pulls a rabbit out of his hat and miraculously brings in a new team that competes for a title and goes to the NCAA he’s gone before we start in a new Conference. It would have been nice to happen this year though to get a head start.

Now we know something happened behind the scenes. I always like a good story but seems like that’s going to be kept internally.

Not wanting to comment on the contract could mean 1 of 2 things. Either it's a work-in-progress for an extension, which he can't talk about, or, he can't comment due to maybe allowing Golding a "way out"

I’m still not 100% convinced that the rumored 2 year extension didn’t happen. I think Jim is keeping the extension on the hush hush and praying Golding can go above .500 in conference play ( which is not difficult at all) with the increase in NIL money and a complete reset of the roster.

That’s a very good read and it’s interesting to read how much NIL dominates recruiting now. Bench guys at a major college program would rather stay there making 3-4x as much NIL money as opposed to coming to UTEP. This obviously doesn’t absolve Golding but being a good recruiter a la Billy G doesn’t matter as much as money.

Also shows how inept Golding is in the new nil age. You can't evenly split your nil budget between all of your scholarship players. Imagine Terrell and Frazier making as much as Hebb, Thomas and Horton.

I'm surprised we didn't lose any players last summer.

I had heard the UTEP basketball NIL compensation was tiered. It makes no sense to pay each guy the same amount, so I question what was stated in the article. I think we will see them add a GM position, just like football. I wouldn't be surprised to see at least two new assistant coaches, but that will likely only happen if Golding is indeed extended. It would be tough to hire any quality assistants with Golding as a lame duck.

Makes no sense if you want to build a winning program but we're utep so it's believable. Frankly, coming as this is a pretty whitewashing article of Golding-it really underplays his failures as a coach--i put a lot of stock in the assertions made in it against those of unnamed sources.

I'm worried that when they discussed his contract that there were no quotes from Golding or senter confirming that it's his last contract year (just the very unenlightening no comment from before). It's just assumed by the writer.

I can’t remember the article I read it from, but Senter was asked about whether Golding was given an extension and he said “no comment”.

It could still go either way, but I don’t have much confidence in that.

$600,000 nil
$300,000 amongst your starting 5
$200,000 6-10
$100,000 11-15
Now that they will have 15 scholies.

agreed. Basketball is a game where your top 7 determine the outcome. 300k to the top 3 players, 200k to 4-7, and 100k for everyone else.

I don't think everyone should get paid. I think just 1 to 9 maybe. The other 100k could be added to the starters to attract better players. So 400k to starters and 200k to the bench. But really Utep needs more than 600k. They need at least 1 million.

I think they’ll get to 1 million by the time they get to MWC. Foster and others will hopefully donate and help. The rest of El Paso is going to have to see improvements before getting on board!

Watched some highlights of the Louisville game last night and Goldings interview afterwards. This was probably the highest I was with my hopes of the team and Golding. It all comes back to coaching, but I do believe something happened behind closed doors. There’s no way this team just crashed and burned with so much potential with no backstory. Managing 18-21 year olds is a tough job we all have to admit especially talented ones that now have money. I wonder if anyone knows more detail, but I can assure you something happened after that NMSU game and then it snowballed after Campers energy. Maybe a lot of finger pointing and they lost their brotherhood spirit. I think this is also obvious by how the whole team was so quickly ready to bail after the portal opened. Frazier wasn’t the leader he should’ve been and Terrell stopped being as vocal. It’s easy to say Golding sucks, and I’m not saying he’s the right guy for the job as he’s obviously proved not to be, but just asking, “What really Happened”?

Golding lost his team, plain and simple. They got their butts whooped by NMSU, and their egos faltered. They were also vocal online with the negative feedback. If they think it will get easier at another school, good luck. It was Golding's job to keep his team together and he failed. He failed as a coach, the next 3 years will be nothing, and then he will be fired. I hope i'm wrong, but what has Golding shown?

Would they have kept him if he lost the team? Seems like there has to be more to the story.

He was asked what happened and said, "I do know, but I don't want to put it on blast,"

Sounds to me like some shit went down beyond his control. Senter knows and thought that Golding deserved a reset because of it.

It’s obvious he lost the team, but if it was that simple, he would be gone IMO.

Maybe a physical altercation involving Bynum and the team took sides and kinda splintered from there? Just spit balling

Good points, from both of you. If it was a fight, I feel like that wouldn't be enough for Senter to justify either. Stefon Jackson had his jaw broken, and they continued on! Sure the players agreed, but coaching had alot to do with that as well. It may very well be something deeper... Maybe Senter is gone lol... Or? Do we have any insiders anymore?

Buck stops with the coach. He recruited the players, he supervised the players and he managed the players during the season. If there was a breakdown, it still falls on Golding. He doesn't get any special points for not discussing the issue bc his mismanagement of whatever the situation was ended UTEP's season.

I don't care what Senter's reasoning for keeping Golding is. Any decent AD would've gotten rid of Golding just based on the results of the past 4 years. Another year is underserved at this point, especially when a whole new batch of players have to be recruited anyways. Lord help us all if there was an extension.

Wow 100k to sit on the bench? How can I apply for that job?? Why not give players incentive contracts?

I would only pay the 1 to 10 players. 11 to 15 would just get scholarships.
They would only be getting 20K each. You can cut it in half, take the extra 50 K, and divide it among the starters.
