Spring Football

The offense looks the same as last year. Even the same old sideline passes that would end up nowhere are still being used. I had high hopes that Malachi Nelson would make UTEP great but he looks awful. No wonder he couldn't make it at USC and Boise State. Not impressed by the QB situation and no changes to the offense. I would be surprised if UTEP breaks .500 this season.

The offense isn’t going to look different. It is what it is. It’s wide splits and run as many plays as you can. Which means simple.

Bold Prediction: Shay Smith starts at quarterback.

Hearing Nelson is getting paid $30,000.

If the former #1 recruit in the nation is getting 30k then I can only imagine how our basketball NIL looks like.

-Skylar was head and shoulders above the rest.
-Malachi looked as if he was still learning the offense and getting into the rhythm of things. He did OK.
-Shay played well and better than Malachi but still stares down WR's and tends to go only to #26.

I also believe there were scouts from 2025 opponents at the game so they kept it simple. Don't get it twisted, Malachi will be your starter. He'll be better come the season opener. Better than Skylar? IDK. But he will start.

It's the playbook, he has an arm and can be accurate. He could have taken more NIL money (elsewhere,) I think if he sticks it out through fall, he will eventually be the starter. Let's not kid ourselves, Walden is going to have Skyler start. Smith looked good though, and I hope he gets a legit shot. Personally, I think things look much better going into year 2 with Walden. They really need to snag an experienced WR. I would be shocked to not see Nelson as the starter come conference play.

You think? I like that Locklear is making a strong case for the job, but I wonder if Malachi was promised first crack. Ultimately if the job wasn’t promised to Malachi the job will be won/lost not in the fall and not spring ball. What I don’t want is for the QBs to platoon like they were doing last year.
But this is where I wonder if the constant transferring has hurt Malachi’s development. Changing QBs and systems the last three years may have hurt his development.

spring game was OK... viewed on YouTube.
But, I have say Malachi looked the part. He just has get the timing down.
I would consider Walden's offensive type to be "the greatest show on turf."
Defense will be much better also.
going to be a great season look for 8 wins

Why did u think Walden’s offensive would change, that’s shame on you. His offensive is his offense, period. The effectiveness of how it’s ran is what matters and will determine how the season goes. Oh and also it was spring ball and Nelson should’ve looked awful in a new offense, I don’t know if you know how football and practices work?!

It’s pretty clear that no matter how the season goes, good or bad, he’s only sticking around for one year.
That’s true. If he does well, he will go to a bigger school. If he stinks, he will go and try it at a similar or smaller school. Where they will celebrate his 5 star status and make outrageous predictions like some did here.

Is it reasonable to think that Nelson’s INTs and staring down receivers is due to still learning the playbook? Or is that the orange koolaid talking?
Could be a little of both, but too early. 100% though he shouldn’t have been expected to be ahead of Skylar or Shay in spring ball. He is literally learning a whole new playbook. Let’s see how it if he improves by fall!

I get that UTEP isn’t a football powerhouse but I love that Walden is reaching out to ex players and bringing them back for the Spring game. I loved that Floyd was the guy who started honoring ex BB players as well.

One thing I saw was Nelson stares down his receiver. All the qb’s looked improved. Offensive ran more passes over the middle.
I know a few of the refs, commented about how hard they were hitting.
Hope springs eternal! Let’s go Miners!
How many screen passes were called? Seriously, anyone who went to the game....how many?
