When Ark. was in the old Southwest Conference, Fayetteville was nicknamed Fayettenam for that very reason.

Uhmm, you might have that confused with Fayetteville, NC., outside of Ft. Bragg. That was known as Fayettenam, never heard of the one in Ark called that...just saying.
 
jamasterj is correct. Fayettenam was used because of the Army post. Most everyone stationed at Fort Bragg, including myself, was headed to Viet Nam, ipso facto, the nickname.
