Artis is a stud. He does what a point guard shoud - he makes those around him better. He can also create his own shot.

Lee Moore is a stud. He can also create his own shot and has great instinct. He'll be clutch when needed.

Hooper stepped up. He was limber and made some nice shots. His 15 and 6 was a nice surprise. He will benfit from the elite backcourt.

Willms looked good. He had two monster dunks and was active on the boards. If he and Hooper produce at a decent level this team will be very difficult to beat.

Flaggert has put on some muscle. He defends hard and takes charges. He hit a three and looked okay.

Paul Thomas was first off the bench and is the freshman that is most ready to play. He rebounds and can be a defensive presence.

Brodericks Jones will be good but first needs to put on weight. He is agile, can run, and can block shots. I would consider redshirtinf him as he has a huge upside.

Trey Touchet is going to be good. He does all of the small things right. He is unflappable and he understands the game - when he is on the floor it is like having a player-coach playing. Once he gets comfortable with shooting the game three - as opposed to the practice three - then he will be a threat. I teally like his upside.

Tevin Caldwell seems as though he shouldn't be out there but I can't tell you why and when he is out there he produces at a high level. He is inflappable, active, and rebounds. This kid - against your instinct - is a good player.

Venegas and Mbachu did okay in limited minutes.

I like this team more than I've liked any Floyd team since the 10-11 team. I think they have the potential to be very good if the bigs produce.

The team we played was a Div.3 team. It is tough to see what kind of team we are playing against very very weak competition.

Agree, hard to make any judgement as the comp was weeeeek! (I thought it was funny that coach Johnson on the postgame said the Loyola NO team had played a game against Xavier and was within 9-10 points. I got home looked it up and it was Xavier NO another small college)

The coaches have to do what they have to do to justify this joke of a schedule.

I was impressed with Matt's mobility, keeping in mind the limited time on the court he'll get each game. Nicely done MinerMando.

I hope fans realize how spoiled we got with a C Lang in the middle. He created matchup problems and was the strongest guy out of the ten that were on the court at any given time. This is college, Floyd can't trade or pick up a player off waivers. He has to work with what he has. Thomas will be a good addition.

Well said MinerMambo, that's how I saw last nights game. The only negative in the game was the three point shooting, but the team does have the ability, so am not concerned.

One additional note on Artis, when I saw the final stats I didn't realize he didn't shoot it well. I thought he played an excellent game. Goes to show you the type of player he is.

I saw the game on the tube and was impressed. Floyd has assembled a quick, strong, powerful team. The depth of the team is also very tough. It looks like the Miners will have a very strong run in CUSA. Epsilon, on the other hand must have been watching a fantasy hoop game on the internet based on his shallow comments of this game!

I just ignore Epsilon and Chih. Their comments are ignorant.

Lou, I agree. The program has not seen a guard like Artis since Fili or Eddie Rivera. Artis is elite. As far as the backcourt, I am not sure we've ever had the type of depth in the backcourt that exists. It will be interesting to see how Omega and Morris integrate as the backcourt is already very good. I anticipate that Floyd will go with dramatically different size arrangments as Willms and Hooper will play at the same time and then he'll go with four guards as well. I think this team can dance if the bigs perform.

As far as the cybergnats, I've ignored them so I don't waste my time with their trash. I use this board for intelligent discussion re Utep sports and the cybergnats don't add any value.

Go Mines!

I know you won't respond (because you don't have any answers), but what " trash" do I spew? What things do I say that aren't intelligent?

I didn't follow last game, UT sounds like they did some good things and I like our new PG. However the team we played would get beat by a good Texas High School team, so I'm still in wait n see mode. Texas St. will be a step up in competition. Once we have e our full compliment of players I do think we will have the best collection of guards in the conference.

Nobody is claiming they beat a high caliber team. But, talent is talent. I've followed UTEP basketball at a microlevel for over thirty years and talent can be spotted from the perspectives of athleticism, court demeanor, decisionmaking, form, etc. - regardless of the opponent. Artis is elite whether he is playing Cardinal Stritch or a power conference school - and so is Moore. We know from last year that Omega and Morris are very good. It's not a stretch to note that a team with a very strong backcourt can win a lot if the team gels.

Caldwell is the most improved returning player seen so far. The guy hustles his ass off.

Morris should be an instant starter once he's back.

Moore is a baller who will help replace some of what we lost in Hunter.

I like Jones' length, athleticism and upside -- he's just a freshman.

Simpletons cannot see that deep into the game. Same here last night. I was not watching the game, nor the opponent. I was watching the same way you were. Especially had my eyes on Matt.

Not being negative, Artis is good no doubt, but he had his pocket picked last night by their little guard, he's got a high dribble and some of that crossover stuff will get him in trouble with a good D1 player in his face. I defer judgment on him until he gets into real competition. Same with Vint he has always looked good against inferior players, I want to see him perform against competition. He is going to see some next Saturday night as Texas State has a legit 6-8 player. They don't have much in the way of guards and I don't expect a game from them but they have a lot more talent than what we have played against and I suspect they will expose some of our flaws.

How dare you be negative on this board! Didn't you know that Artis is going to be the next Tim Hardaway and is a elite player who be a star in the NBA?

Agree on Caldwell, he will make an impact this year, he is a high energy guy who really knows his role. Loved that kid when he was at Americas HS. Even though he was the star on those teams he played hard all the time

I finally put the nuts on ignore, and what a difference reading these threads! The desperation in chi's posts yesterday was comical, but distracting too. Only shows his true agenda. Same with Epsilon. I think they've just about worn out their welcome here and posters are recognizing it's better to ignore or not respond to the two.

I've had them on ignore for several months and it's improved my quality of life immensely.

Thanks for this post, should be a fun season.

me too. a few months on a couch getting therapy would help them I think.

When has Lee Moore played a power conference school?

Read his response slowly and carefully. He's not saying he did.
