Today’s MBB practice

Too funny. Could you at least tell us what the score vs TCU was?

Don’t worry, we saw the social media clip of Senter on the court. Guess he doesn’t have anything better to do at the moment.

Have fun at the ENMU, Florida A&M, and Riverside games. Boy are we jealous!!!!!

I unironically really enjoy those early season games since it gives a glimpse into the team’s depth/strategies and there’s no pressure on the outcome of the game. Nice way to spend Tuesday evening.

Anyone know the details of Souley's injury and whether or not he's playing Tuesday?

They said it was a freak accident in practice where he got it caught in another player’s jersey. It’s not his shooting hand and should be able to go by regular season, hopefully sooner.

Getting Giddy. A source close to the action in the Don expects nothing better than a 50-50 season. I hope he's wrong, but after hearing that we were soundly crunched by TCU maybe he's right.
Tuesday we'll finally have a chance for judgement.

I have heard the same as your source 1liner, in terms of season expectations. We will find out soon.

There’s always excitement for a new coach and philosophy (I’ve been a fan of Golding’s energy as well), but the truth is we were already a 50-50 team at best, and I don’t think his recruiting this year has changed that outlook. I wish Golding success, but he has a very long, and very difficult road ahead of him..

We should see very tangible evidence of improvement from year to year. To the tourney by year 4. I’m willing to suffer through a shitty first season without much judgement. Especially with visible signs of improvement from season’s beginning to end.

The best thing about playing in a 1 bid conference is the regular season is meaningless and the real season starts in the CUSA Tourney. Hopefully we get on a little hot streak in the "real season" and thats all you need.

I often wonder if these basketball tournaments are profitable for the non-power conferences. I guess if they have TV deals in place, then that pretty much answers the question. We know they are for the power conferences. My thinking is that, if a team gets on a hot streak during the tournament, it makes the whole regular season meaningless. You're basically just playing for seeding throughout the whole season. I know the NCAA leaves it up to the conferences to determine how their one automatic bid is awarded. Up until recently the Ivy League awarded its bid to the regular season conference champion. Now they too have a postseason tournament.

I'm hoping to be contending for the tourney by year three. Although Golding was my first choice, I had Jans as a very close second based on his ability to turn the program around quickly. Speaking of Jan's, that early game against the Aggies should give us a good indication of where we are at right out of the box.

Hope with the "new" CUSA we have a change in venue for the conference tourney, Frisco just doesn't excite. Nashville would be cool as would Miami. Another option is to rotate sites to conference sites which we did early on. Be cool if UTEP hosted the men and NMSU hosted the women or visa a versa.

With the majority of CUSA 3.0 being east of UTEP and NMSU, don't expect it to in our neck of the woods. CUSA headquarters is in Dallas, so most likely it'll remain in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Just find another venue other than The Star. That high school set up looks bush league. Nashville would be a nice alternate site as well.

The optimist in me says we may be better than 500. The positives for this year include experience in the backcourt and likely a style change. Negatives are we are thin up front and not sure we can hold our own on the offensive end. The unknowns are we really don't know what these guys can do, we were so Williams focused the last two years. My guess is someone is going to surprise and I think it is the transfer form OSU, on paper he doesn't look like a star but you can't discount playing 3 years in a good program.

I think whoever is the highest bidder to host the CUSA tourney gets the gig. All the travelers have to suck it up.

Mosquito: I agree with JC that we'll have a better year than Terry ever did at UTEP. So you'd be correct.
Terry was a good recruiter but couldn't figure out how to utilize the talent he had.
He'll pull that untapped talent onto the court and that will compensate for the loss of BW. Onyema, Bieniemy and Tydus will step it up, and Maring will be a presence down low. We will replace BW by committee.
A huge difference will be our head coach and his assistants.

I truly expect better than 50-50. We know how much of a dud Terry was. He ended up 12-12 with unused and misused talent, so with a fireball coach, who the players love and who has proven his ability to execute plays, create defenses, strategies and motivation; it has to get better.
