In two seasons, Army scored on 14 of 17 possessions against UTEP(not counting victory formation). UTEP only forced 2 punts and got one turnover in 8 quarters, Army basically did what they wanted the rest of the time. Tom Mason’s defenses were terrible against military option schools in the years prior to him arriving at UTEP and it continued once he got to UTEP.

UTEP's Defensive Coordinator(Tom Mason) has played against 2 Option Teams in the past 11 months and those 2 Option Teams have scored a combined 124 points! Air Force scored 58 points against Mason's Hawaii team at the end of last season. Then tonight, Army scored 66 points and they did not punt during the entire game. 124 points in only 2 games. I am going to go out on a limb and say that Mason has not been the most effective Coach at getting his teams ready for the Option recently. Kugler might want to find him some help for when we have to prepare again for Army next season.

Speaking of next season, with Road Games at Oklahoma, Army, and NMSU, and then only one Home Game against Arizona, it is entirely possible that UTEP could go 0-4 in our non-conference next season.

To update this above post, which I made last year on Sept 26 of 2016. Mason has now given up 159 combined points in his last 3 games against Military Option Schools.

I also correctly proposed that we would end up 0-4 in our non-conference games this season.

His defense is not made for the option but that is no excuse.

The problem is UTEP not so good d line. Alvin Jones and his crew can't shoulder all the load. UTEP really doesn't have that many on the defensive side who get low and lay the wood except the linebackers. They're just tuckered by the 4th. I really do think UTEP lacks core strength. Players get better as the game goes on. Will obviously has it. Alvin has it too as does Louvilette. But it was good seeing UTEP showing some spine and not letting Army score a slop TD at the very end.

This season UTEP has now allowed 226 points for an average of 45.2 per game.

UTEP has scored 70 points for an average of 14 per game.

Of those 70 points, 48 have been scored by the offense, 12 by the defense, and 10 by special teams. The offense has scored 9.6 points per game.

Agreed. Army could have run the clock out by taking a knee thrice but didn't. That wasn't very classy. They didn't run any trick plays or anything to blatantly run up the score, but they were clearly hoping to pad their lead.

They've been manhandled all year. Props to them for not folding this far into the season. But the pass rush is non existent.
If you watch the TD they gave up in the 3rd at 1:54:32 they rush 3 and the RE got stonewalled by 2 blockers. The LE got stonewalled by 1 blocker and I don't even know WTF the DT is doing. It almost looks like he said "F*ck it I'll cover Lary Rose on the flat" and then had a hanger of heart. I would think these are our 3 best linemen since it was a red zone play. 2 couldn't beat single blocks.
The QB had almost 10 seconds to get rid of the ball. At least the secondary forced a difficult throw on the sideline.

There was a play in the 4 qtr where Greenlee was sacked and it looked like Army rushed 3 DL and blitzed one LB and our C, G, and T didn't block anyone while the blitzing(outside) LB is already standing up from sacking the QB is when those 3 realized it. It wasn't Hernandez btw.
