Compiled a list of the top single-season statistical performance, using the infamous "Prouty" ranking system.

The Prouty system is derived as:

Prouty Rating = [Offensive Efficiency + Total Offense + Possessions Gained + Win Rating] / 4

Offensive Efficiency = Total Points / (FGA*2 + FTA)

Total Offense = (Total Points + A*2 - TO) / Player MIN

Possessions Gained = (REB + S + BLK/2 - PF) / Player MIN

Win Rating = Player MIN / (Team MIN / 5) * (Wins / Game #)

A few notes:

1) List goes back to the 1986-87 Season, when the 3 point line was introduced, also prior to this season the UTEP Stats group some players under the "Others" category so hard to get individual stats

2) I excluded any player who did not play in more than 2.5% of the team's availability minutes in a season, so if a team played 30 games (30 x 40 min x 2.5%) = 30 minutes of game time - or an average of 1 min/game. This is to exclude any player who played 1 minute, hit a three and got a rebound - he would be #1 all time.

3) The numbers seem to fall into these general categories

Over .5000 One of the All-time Best Ever - Consideration for Conference POY

.4000 to .5000 Solid Season - Probably All-Conference

.3500 to .4000 Probably 2nd or 3rd Team All Conference

.3000 to .3500 Good Contributor, starter, usually 3rd or 4th scorer on that particular team

.2000 to .3000 Decent player, sometimes you see a great player in the freshman year in this range

.2000 This is the "Escobedo Line" - under that and probably shouldn't have been playing D1 basketball - however you will see some players who later developed into very solid UTEP players their Jr/Sr years.

Due to Character Limits – breaking into separate sub-lists

Tim Bug is #1, but DJ has two years in the Top 10. While his 00-01 team wasn't very good, Wolfram being at #3 shows how great of basketball player he truly was. Meanwhile, only one set of teammates made the Top 10. The OT/Fili years were very fun during our last WAC runs.

Fun lists!

Interesting to see my old classmate Antoine Gillespie with two top ten years. Toward the bottom of the list I see my old classmate, David Dick, and the inexplicably popular Fernie Hernandez . I notice Donta Randle, but don't remember him ever actually playing.

Thanks TD! You did a great job in performing the research and in calculating these ratings. At least on this end it is very much appreciated.

I remember Hardaway's senior season well. It happened to coincide with my senior year at UTEP. He was absolutely amazing that year. While the national media was raving about other point guards, like Sherman Douglas, BJ Armstrong, and Dana Barros, it was hard to get excited while watching them, having seen much better point guard play at the (then) Special Events Center. What a special year by a special player.

Of course, the list didn't just evoke memories of Hardaway and that season, but of a lot of players, and a lot of great basketball. I really enjoyed the trip down memory lane.

It's also interesting to see that of the top 10 single season performances by a Miner (according to the Prouty ratings) since the 86-87 season, ten have been by guards, with only OT and Wolfram cracking the list.

Thanks again for putting this together. I really enjoyed it.

Damn.... That's more research than Wikipedia. Pretty impressive. How many years ago did you start your project?

Funny seeing Eddie Williams and Arlandis Rush on the list. Neither was a UTEP star but both were well known to dominate the pickup games at Memorial Gym.

It frustrates me to no end how he continually gets denied enshrinement into the BHOF in Springfield. Along with Stockton and Payton, he was the most feared PG in the league for two years, prior to his knee injury, and 5-6 years after being traded to Miami. He also incorporated the deadliest dribble move for the PG position (Iverson's version is garbage). While Hardaway didn't invent the move (he credits Pearl Washington), he did revolutionize the crossover dribble, which is now used regularly by more than just PG's. I know he made a huge mistake with his live radio broadcast of anti-gay comments, but surely he's made amends by now.

In the summer before school started, one night I ran into Antonio Davis and Eddie Williams at the Whataburger on University/N Mesa. Davis was about to be a Freshman - I was in HS. Davis told me and my friend to call Eddie Williams "Alien" and started laughing - Williams was about to kick my a@@ if I said it, so I didn't. Antonio asked us if we had any beer with us, when we said no, they got ready to leave.

A few years later I played in a 3-3 tournament in some random gym in Juarez, and Eddie Williams showed up. He killed that day and some guy was offering him a contract to play in a league somewhere in Mexico - don't think he did it.

My 2 Eddie Williams stories

I was also friends with a family that "hosted" Jerry Jones, he borrowed my friends scooter and ended up landing in a bush, and ended up having to wear the halo neck brace for months - never played college ball again.

Although not on the list, my girlfriend and friends were in love with Dallas David (he looked like Vanilla Ice), we would see him at Club101 or Mesa Inn the summer before school started. I gave them hell when he was busted for stealing checks from someone's mailbox - never played at UTEP.

Yep, the list brought back a few memories...

Good times, TD, good times. Thanks for sharing.

There was some serious talent on those teams with out a doubt, but some serious knuckleheads as well. Thank goodness (for them) back then there was no such thing as social media. There was plenty of player turnover as well (not saying it is necessarily a good thing). In general, the rule was "if you can play, you will stay". Other than Antonio, I don't think any of the guys you mentioned above stayed for their senior year. I remember hanging out with a guy named Joe Griffin (transfer from WSU), who was supposed to take Hardaway's place (maybe Jeep, can't recall now). If I recall he only ended up staying for a short time; it didn't take too long to figure out he was no Hardaway. He kind of just disappeared.
